I've read a lot of conflicting information on this point, but have no
experience yet.

With a boat like Micro, all the joinery is backed up with fastenings. In my
case, I'm using SS ring nails and bronze screws as well as epoxy. For
combination glue and nail/screw joinery I don't think removing the paper is
necessary. I'm not sure I'd do the same with a glue only joint with out a
lot of testing beforehand.

In any case, I plan on thorough testing before I try anything radical. Rest
assured, I'll report my findings here.

Best,

JB in Oregon this week, Wisconsin next week - when is he ever going to find
time to build?

I see someone else already answered you question as to what is it is. I'll
add that it generally a fir core with much fewer voids than seen in ACX.
You can buy it with the paper on one or both sides. It is also available
pre-primed for paint, but you want the unprimed variety. The thinnest I've
been able to find is 3/8", 1/2" and 3/4" is widely available. Try sign
shops and signmakers' supply houses for sources. Home Depot does not carry
it. It's beautiful stuff.

It's still epoxy, unfortuately for you Mike! (Given your sensitivity) I'll
just say that I find the epoxy business "interesting".

Best,

JB who knew he'd someday find a use for his chemistry degree...

Hi,

What do you do if a glue joint is required on the paper side? Sand it off?

Thanks,

MDO Plywood is medium density overlay. It's a very good quality plywood used
for exterior signs, mostly. The exterior is a phenolic bonded kraft paper
surface, very smooth and ready for paint of epoxy. Most lumberyards either
stock it or can get it fairly quickly. I order it from my local lumberyard
and they even deliver it to my back door! Just ordered two 1/2" sheets good
both side for about $37.00/sheet.

Bolgermen (and women),

John Bell writes that he is using MDO plywood for his Micro. He says it won't
check and is paint ready! Great. What is this stuff and is it available out
here in Washington State?

Also John, you say you are making your own glues? Cool. What's that all about?
