RE: 'Grape shot' & sail repair

Thanks to all who responded to my call for sail repair help, with special
thanks to Derek and Ron. I will very likely completely replace the sail by
next year and really only need this one to get me through the fleeting
remains of this season. I'm seriously thinking of constructing an
experimental Chinese lug or Chinese gaff (like Derek Water's rig)for next
year. On the other hand I put so much work into restoring this boat (she's
really just too adorable for words) I can't bring myself to launch her with
an overly ratty looking sail. I'll probably settle for a launch lusting
compromise that I convince looks fine through a fog 50 metres or more off
shore. I hope to post some pictures soon. Thanks again.

Jeb,
I was going to say, I can't be the only one with a Sailrite catalog.
Then I read Derek's very complete answer. {He must be an engineer - his
detailed response looks like the ones I write !!}. However he came soooo
close, then skidded the shot at the last second.

Not only does Sailrite have the proper thread, but take a look on page
30 & 31 of the 2004 catalog. Tear Aid {Type A} just might be the an easy
fix . . . to hold you over until you replace the entire sail. At $5 a
foot {x 3 inches} . . .'Use them on boat & RV covers . . . nylon SAILS .
. .'

The reason I say this it seems like a lot of time & work for a sail that
is most likely generally weakened. {Sort of like Phil & Dynamite's
advice to me about rotted transoms a customer wanted me to replace}. You
can see the 'bigger' wasp holes. You CAN'T see the other broken threads
that are the beginning of what would have {or may}become other holes.
Nor can you see the damage caused by heat, abrasion in creases, and
possibly other 'critters' - during the YEARS in the shed.

And don't try to tell me NS doesn't get hot during the summer . . .

The effort that Derek suggests could {would ?}be better spent making a
completely new sail from a Sailrite kit.

Just my opinion . . . a believer in the K.I.S.S. principle.

Regards & Good Luck,

Her mainsail got wasp nibbled during the years they were stored in a
shed. It's in good shape except for a number of small holes here and
there.

Any tips on the best way to patch these holes will be greatly
appreciated. Thanx.
