Re: [bolger] Re: Mid Atlantic Small Craft Festival

By the way,

I'm tryingto get in touch with Robin at the museum as regards the judging
activities. Not that my workmanship is worthy of praise, but just to say
I did it. I notice that the judging is based on a "display". I'm
thinking the Chebacco will have to be in the water by 9 AM Saturday or do
they do the judging on a trailer. (Seems counterproductive to me.)
ANyway. See y'all in 3 weeks.
Hi Ed and all,

We will be coming and look forward to meeting you and your Chebacco.
And we look forward to seeing Craig O'D again. With Craig, I hope to
shake up our 4'long model gunter-rigged sailboat that I collected
when working in southern Malaysian kampungs in '02. We'd heard before
that we would be able to camp--pitch a tent, use the rear of our
pickup truck--in the museum parking lot or some such arrangement(?).
I wrote to them on email about this but they never replied. Does
anyone have information about this? Must remember to bring life
jackets!

Take some road from Canada south.

Head for Wilmington Del (or Baltimore)

In the case of Wilm, you want 301 South once you get there by I-95. Then
follow the signs to go to 50 South (East). Follow the signs from Easton to
St Michaels. There's only one road from there.

In the case of Balto, you get on 50 East and keep going, over the Bay
Bridge, til you see Easton.

Really, the confusing part will be getting through Balto. on the various
interstates.

Tell Cap'm Pierre he can take a ride on the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry too.

A street address? Laddie, ya've not been to St. Michael's before,
have you?

Plug "St. Michaels" into Mapquest or Yahoo Maps and you'll get
directions to Rt. 33, the
ony road that runs THROUGH St. Michaels. You'll be
driving west, coming from the direction of Easton.

Drive all the way through town. Look for the old Knapps
Narrows drawbridge on your right. Yes, a real, full-size bascule
drawbridge. You can't miss it -- the bridge is always up.

Drive under the bridge -- no wake, please -- and into the museum
parking lot.

Oh, the town ramp is maybe 1/2 mile from the museum docks.

You can drive into the parking area, go in around the big tent, recruit
stalwarts, carry the boat maybe 75 feet to the wooden ramp at the museum.
That's where boats go in and out all day.

Not entirely sure if Twisted Seagull can carry Peter and I (the
skipper), AND enough suds to keep the crew from mutinying over a two
mile pull. Not entirely sure if Peter has the stamina to pull that

There's a ramp at, is it Oak Creek? Royal Oak? About 2 miles before you hit
St M's. on the St M's side of the bridge across the creek.

This will surely be less crowded.

There's probably a ramp at the Miles R Yot Club, but unless you're a Yottie
with a Yot Club membership that offers a reciprocal deal with the MRYC ...

And then there's another ramp at Claiborne, on the Bay and around the
peninsula from St M's. Very scenic but maybe too far.

Here's what the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Maryland on
the scenic Eastern Shore of Chesapeake Bay (www.cbmm.org) has to say about
the event:

Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival
Saturday, October 2, 10am-5pm
One of the nation's premier small craft events! Hundreds of amateur and
professional boat builders and enthusiasts bring their skiffs, kayaks, and
canoes. Take part in demonstrations and workshops, or simply chat with the
owners and watch these one-of-a-kind vessels race. Included with Museum
admission.

I can tell you from previous years that it's a getogether that's well worth
traveling to; tons of boats of ALL types, lots of builders and designers
(for example, John Welsford will be coming up from New Zealand to be there
this year and will be giving a workshop). Bring a PFD, and you'll be able
to try out just about any boat you like.

Hi Ed,

The ramp you mention is an excellent choice. Launch early!

As far as the rest of the entourage, museum admission will do nicely.
There's a ton of stuff to see there; and sadly, when that pales, there is
loads of expensive shopping just outside the Museum in picturesque St.
Michaels..... Comfy shoes, and bring a PFD if you'd like to try some of the
boats in the water.

I'll be arriving with the Chebacco late Friday. We're booked in at the Best
Western St. Michaels due to concessions made to HRH and her "princess & the
pea" syndrome. Nevertheless we'll be looking to meet as many of y'all as we
can.

Since this is our first trip to the festival any suggestions about where to
launch etc are welcome. For instance I know of one ramp near the St.
