If I am not mistaken, you will get more stiffness if you double the
width of the gunwhale instead of adding an inwhale. This way the side
of the boat acts as a flange of a beam. Havn't run the numbers, but I
could if it was important. You could even add a piece wider than the
current gunwhale, though this might present problems with drainage when
upside down.
