epoxy product, epoxy knowledge and epoxy prices at Smith Company
[mostly because it seemed wasteful to by my epoxy from Raka in
Florida]. Your experience may vary, but mine was such that I
enthusiastically continue to buy from Raka in Florida.
Raka also sells a premium epoxy to compete with West. And like West,
it is thick, stinky, harder to mix accurately and will easily burn
your skin.
The higher ratio epoxies have somewhat better properties, most of
which add little to a bolger-style boat.

Last time I checked, Smith's CPES was awful expensive for what's in
it. You can make your own for half the money of CPES by mixing Raka
with Xylene.

I've used west and raka. I like the raka better for 2 reasons.
1. It's thinner and seems to soak into the wood a little better.
2. I try and be safe with the stuff but seem to get it on me from
time to time. The raka just gets scrubbed off when i notice it. I
know the west is there cause i can feel it burning me!
I think the key is to find someone that built a boat with raka 5-10
years ago and see how it's holding up......keeping in mind the prep
work involved.
For my $$$$$$ i'm sold on larry's stuff.

Is anyone aware of any independent compartive testing of epoxies?
i.e. for bond strength, water permeability, tolerance to imperfect mix
ratios, susceptibility to amine blushing, etc., etc.
I have built two boats using West System and am on my second using
Raka. So far, I do not see that West has any advantage to justify the
price premium, other than being available locally. I would like to be
fully informed before I buy epoxy for a big project.
