Re: [bolger] Re: New old bolger boat....st. valerie & Smaller URLs

I agree that Beebe's book is subversive. An equally subversive one in
the other direction is Jerome W Fitzgerald's "Sailing with Purpose".
Somewhat of a rant it is informative and can be seductive. I have
concluded that if you are putting an engine in you ought to go with
Beebe commit to power and get rid of the sails that get little use
anyway. Otherwise dump the engine, read Fitzgerald and get a boat that
can really perform under sail.

John and Susan and AntiSpray are outside of Columbus,
Indiana. I got their number from PB&F and as I was
going to be in Columbus for a bike ride, I called to
see if I could kick the steel plate.

I don't know them well. I just stopped by after I
called to see if they were accepting visitors. I left
John with a copy of Beebe's "Voyaging Under Power."

Too late for him as he's already well into building
AntiSpray. VUP is a totally subversive text for those
of us who always thought we'd like to sail the word.
PB&F's Tahiti and Sitka are sort of the minimalist
versions of Beebe's thesis that a "motor all the time"
boat is the most economical and reliable world
cruiser. You can find VUP on the Internet for $4 to
$10. Phil says that the changes in the second edition
is a perversion of Beebe's intent and a shameless
advertising ploy.

PB&F have some very interesting expansions on the
theory, including several cartoons that they did for
me when I thought I was going to be rich enough...,
that are very interesting. I expect to see a couple of
them in MAIB in the next few months.

Phil designed the something or other houseboat at my
request in SBJ which appears in BWOM. I didn't build
it. It was, as he says in his write up, smaller than I
thought I needed.

Maybe I'll persue one of my dreams, building as many
PB and PB&F designs as time alots.

Damn wicked gorgeous she be:-)

BTW Phil - In what area are John and Susan located just in case a guy
wanted to drop by and take some photos. I plan to be in the NYC area
some time soon and may get up to Goucester and down to Jersey.

Thanks, Nels
Thanks.

Damn (ignoring the stricture against cursing) she's a
good looking boat! Yar as they say or said down east.

There it is St. Valarie in Bolger 4

Jason
For those of us who can't type or even mouse
accurately I urge our correspondents to use
tinyurl.com or it's newer clone myturl.com to simplify
their postings.

I couldn't figure out Jason's URL and get to see St.
Valerie on line.

Thanks

The appeal of this craft in the pictures was greatly enhanced by the
perfection of Sam Devlin's construction. There a couple of things
to note about it. 1) Since the freeboard necessary for the desired
accomodation was too great for a 4' width of ply, PCB went to a move
complex construction, glued lap, perhaps, and drew a very pretty
hull. 2) He used the Cartopper scheme of small centerboard well
forward and a big rudder to move the cb trunk out of the middle of
the cabin. 3) He set the masts in tabernacles, 4) He devised an out-
of-site mounting for the ob.

The sailing performance is said to be quite good (see note below)
unless she's pinched. In that case, it falls off precipitously.

Peter

Note: Boats are customarily described as 'fast.' Like the children
of Lake Woebegon, they are all above average. The explanation is
that 'fast' must be understood in context. Any inside-ballasted,
traditional-style boat is not going to be 'fast' compared to a deep
keel sportboat, but a light, modern one is going to be much faster
than the heavy traditional prototype of the paradigm.

Yep, it was featured a few years back in an article Bolger wrote for
Wooden Boat about shoal-draft self-righting designs. The article also
included the Jochems Schooner.

I think, the article may be in one of the Bolger groups files.

Chris
She was written up in Woodenboat sometime age, but within 5 years,
or so. Good article with some good photos.
