Re: [bolger] Digest Number 2200

Barry--The only time I've built foam into a boat was in a Bolger Sweet Pea. I used white foam insulation which I cut more or less to shape with a hand saw, and stacked in the compartments between the bulkheads and the stems. The fore and aft decks held it in place. I never dumped the boat, but I recently saw it (some 15 years later) and the foam is still in place. If you are going to use an outboard, it would probably be prudent to dump some gas on the foam before you install it to see if it holds up. Muskrats and ducks/geese/gulls apparently like to chew up foam, so it needs to be more or less encapsulated in plywood.

Dear List,
On many of the bolger plans (e.g., Teal or kayak) they say you can add foam
for floatation. Could anybody tell me which type of foam is best for this
purpose (blue? Pink? White? Canned expanding Spray foam?) Also, does it
need to be wrapped in something? How can it be best secured under a deck?
Thanks for your help,
Barry Rosen

Shows a picture of my Teal, [hard to see but...]
I just rough cut and wedged in place white
expanded polystyrene foam. The screwed and
glued in place 1/4" plywood sheathing to hold it
in place.

It is worthwhile to keep the foam up off the
bottom of the boat, both because it is helpful
to be able to store long things under the
foam, but also if you put the foam down low,
[as opposed to up high] when the boat gets
flooded, I fear that the foam will go buoyant
flipping the boat upside down.

For Wacky Noodles used as flotation outside the gunwales, completed
boats are at the bottom of the page.

Teal would remain afloat even if completely swamped. The best place
to put additional flotation would be attached to the crew i.e. wear a
pfd.

Or you could build in buoyancy compartments fore and aft like this:

This version would also allow you to lash a few "noodles" inside, or
even outside, the gunwale. (Noodles = long thin soft foam cylinders
used by children in swimming pools).

Solutions for other designs would vary according to the design.

Don't use white bead-board.

Use extruded polystyrene or polyurethane.

You can also use things like sealed up empty spring water bottles.
