Bolger boats at CBMM
Does anyone know the owner/builder of the Bolger teal seen at CBMM?
Peter, I saw her silently glide in to dock, right there, next to Ed's
Chebacco. I didn't realize that it was Lily. Might well have been
standing next to you and not have realized that either!

I didn't catch sight of it undersay, unfortunately.
Peter
Hence the need for a sign-in Birdwatcher sort of Standard Bearer....
As I saw it, the CBMM event was quite special for Bolger and those
interested in his designs: many were there in the flesh and in the
water. There was Ed's Chebacco, the Folding Schooner, the Martha
Jane, the canoe-yawl built/owned by Clemens, and smaller craft that I
missed: a Gypsy, a Teal. Someone mentioned a Lily but I wasn't sure
about it.

did not bring Mr Birdwatcher. So I made a quick tour of the grounds and
talked to folks but I missed a number of people I'd like to have met.

One of the prettiest boats there was a Bolger design: the Nord
Koster canoe yawl, built and owned by boatbuilder William Clements.
If you don't know the boat, here's a link to Bill's site:
www.boatbldr.com/boats/koster.html
Incidentally, regarding Peter's picture of a trailer with a mast and
etc.: I forget the name of the fellow it belongs to, but he used it
as a demonstration for his presentation on handling a gaff rig.

Memories are still a tad fuzzy after drinking both mine, and the AWOL
Peter Lenihan's share of the local Chesapeake hootch and hootches.

Ed Hein's Chebacco sailed wonderfully. The winds were fair, but a
slight riffle kicked things up for a bit out there and she took off
with gusto and there was a fine smile on Ed's face. The man's
efforts convert to sailing pleasure! Bravo to Ed, Bravo to Phil
Bolger.
So many Bolger boats there I needed a Bolger Map! Wow.
My only 'complaint' was that too many of the boats were so perfect
(how do I bring my clutzy handywork into the midst of so many fine
boatbuilders?).
Ed, I shall take my rolls of film down for processing today. When
they are back I'll scan some and send them to you (either over the
internet or via snail mail, probably the latter). Please email me
directly with your snail mail address -- there must be a few you'll
want of you putting up that mizzen mast, getting that snotter set,
etc., and I'm sure you'd like them.
Maybe next year, seeing the previous emails re: CBMM, we'd better
think of a stick in the ground with a sign-in sheet stapled to it for
Bolger List folks?
Cheers,
Dick

the Chebacco sailed like a dream. I can't wait to get out and play
with it some more. We've decided to make a twelve foot long sack out
of tarp to put the mast, boom & mizzen in with sails laced on, then
it will be maybe half or less as long to launch. As it was with
Dick's help we got her in the water in about an hour & a half.
That's an hour that I should be sailing.

I really enjoyed my visit too.
Particularily nice, was meeting and putting faces to names I've known
here for years. Peter Vanderwaart, Paul Esterle, Ed Heins, John
Katrien, David Romasco, Mike Hanni, and very much worth the trip,
John Welsford. Lots of boat chat, and a few good yarns over a cold
Sam Adams or two in some really excellent seafood joints.
Bolger boats I saw there were:
Martha Jane,
Folding Schooner,
Chebacco,
Lily,
Wisp,
Gypsy,
A great time, well worth 18 hours of driving.
Bruce Hector
Bit of good luck, poor Peter Lenihan couldn't get the time off, so I
actually arrived back in Canada with some beer left! Never woulda'
happened if he'd have been able to come with me.

about dark in the Tred Avon, at Easton, Md. on Friday
night, spent the night in a cove below Easton,
planning to go down the Tred Avon and the Choptank,
around Tilghman Island and up the Miles River to St.

stiff out of the South, and was dark-looking to boot,
so we decided to run up Broad and San Domingo Creeks
instead, and landed at the dike on the South side of
St Michaels. It was only a few block's walk to the
festival, but we didn't get to show Spat off. There
were many, many great boats, including varnished
beauties with joinery work that took my breath away.
Some neat Bolger boats, too, including a Martha Jane
and what had to be the world's prettiest Teal. What
fun. Sam
