Re: Bolger-designed submarine
A wooden sub using electric pod motors some for forward propulsion, some for up and down would be too cool. The Argonaut Jr. is in this month's PopSci, based on a 19th century sub that rolled along the bottom powered a metal crank.

I am curious if Susanne has anything to add about this PCB design
sketch for a wooden submarine? Was this in conjunction with the Navy

PCB wooden submarine? Was it hard chined?

Has PCB published a drawing or cartoon of this plan?
If so, were can I find it? Is it on the web any where?
A great site to visit for those interested is:

Nice photos eh Dan? It's a 1:1 reproduction af the original Ictineo
II, made for a film about Monturiol's life and inventions. Very
interesting.

I must admit, I've always thought it'd be quite cool to own my own
submarine (ok, my own minisub). IIRC Stevenson Projects have come up
with at least one design for an underwater vehicle, though it's not
strictly speaking a submarine (the operator and passenger wear SCUBA
gear and are thus limited by air supply and decompression issues).
To tie this in to another thread, a submarine is one way of surviving
heavy weather in the open ocean, just dive to 10-20 metres below the
surface and cruise in peace. IIRC, there's a company in the US offering
a range of acrylic submarines (the pressure hull is about 8 inches
(20cm) thick). They claimed that their largest model (about 20m long, I
think) could do a transatlantic crossing in 14 days, submerged. Pretty
impressive, though considering the price tag was in millions of US
dollars I'd hope it was impressive.
Thanks for the info,
Dan

believe anyone's built a wooden submarine since David Bushnell's Turtle
in 1776 (apart from the two replicas of Turtle herself).
> He said all of his work on it has been lost to time and moths.Oh well, it would have been interesting to see what he'd come up with.

I asked Phil about this once, a few years back. IIRC he replied it
was for a wooden sub, for some government agency, nevr got past the
sketch/cartoon stage and was not built. Metails sketchy.
He said all of his work on it has been lost to time and moths.

Hi all,
I was reading my new copy of 'Build the New Instant Boats' yesterday and
came across a reference to a submarine designed by PCB: "...his
creations range from little workaday scows to a submarine..." on page 5.
Does anyone know anything about this design? I'm guessing that it's a
research or tourist vessel of some kind (assuming it was actually built
at all).
