Re: [bolger] Re: MDO Quote

Well now, I have always wondered if 15 feet was the ideal length for a small row/sail boat or if that length was dictated by the length of a plank available from splicing two 4 X 8 sheets of plywood together.

In the current instance, Jim Michalak draws very simple 15 footers with cuddies. I commissioned Jim to stretch one of his designs to 19 feet, while keeping the beam and depth the same. My thought was that I could splice two and a half sheets to obtain a 20 foot plank and end up with a lot more boat for the cost of 2 more sheets of plywood. When I strated looking at MDO, i found that it was a little sheaper to obtain the needed quantity in 4 X 10 sheeets than 4 X 8 sheets. Now that I have it, the downside is that the extra 2 feet makes the sheet somewhat harder for an old man to throw around!

One caution on stretching designs. If you're going to do it, you probably need to beef up the scantlings (in my boat, Jim went from 1/4" sides and 1/2" bottom to 3/8" sides and a 3/4" bottom) and a straight scale up of the sail probably will result in too much sail area.

Given the ease of the Payson fiberglass butt splice, the 15 foot envelope is no longer much of a constraint. However, plywood is a pretty floppy material and at some point, the weight and floppiness of longer planks require two or three sets of hands. For me, a 19 footer is about the limit.

Hmmm, 4' x 10'... what an opportunity to do a 25% stretch on all
those Bolger designs laid out on 4' x 8' sheets! Imagine an 18'
Microtrawler, a long Long Micro, a 33' Sneakeasy or a 37'6"
Tennessee!

(Warning: don't take this too seriously).

I just bought several sheets of 3/8's" 4' X 10' Signal MDO from Harbor Sales for $57 a sheet. The stuff I got looks very good. Between rising oil prices, the demand for plywood products for hurricane recovery in FL, and the fact that the Chinese are competing for all kinds of materials, I expect prices will increase fairly dramatically soon. Grab It while you can !

I live in Canada and last week I bought some Crezone and some 3/4"
thick, G1S of a somewhat lower quality used for concrete forms.

Here was the price quotes I got.
3/8" G2S (5 even thickness plys) $62 cdn
1/2" G2S (5 even thickness plys) $67 cdn
1/2" G1S (5 even thickness plys) $57 cdn.

I loved the looks of the 3/8" so bought it even though the 1/2 G1S is
cheaper.

The 3/4" concrete form grade has 7 equal plys, some small voids on
the B side. Was on sale for half price at $34 cdn. (Heavy stuff!)
What I don't use for the bottom, can be used for shelving.

I expect that the prices of this stuff will be going up considerably
due to the oil prices. Therefor any price one can get will seem like
a bargain 3 months from now.

Cheers, Nels

Phil-
Is it the signal grade or the other one? Sounds pretty close i'll
dig out my receit for the olypic stuff i purchased. I had a sheet
that had a bad delamination spot so make sure you can refuse
shipment if you get a bad sheet.

N. Glantz & Son, Sign & Supply of Oklahoma gave me a quote of $41.23
per 4 x 8 sheet for Olympic 3/8" double-sided MDO. Their truck stops
once a week in Russellville, so delivery is virtually free.

Does this sound reasonable and in the ball park?
