Re: [bolger] MAIB Vol 22 - #11 Oct 15, 2004 BOLGER DESIGN # 639 -- JOCHEMS SCHOONER

Hi Bruce -

Hope your MAIB comes soon -- Jochems Schooner is 25' OD with leeboards so
theres plenty of undisturbed room inside.
I'll just wet your curiosity a bit by saying that she's designed on the
Birdwatcher principle (original builder was 6'4") - 4 berths and a complete
gally with the head behind a curtain way up forward so no ones disturbed
during the nite.
For those who like to pull strings she carries 4 sails - nothing too big
and on the newest version Dr Phil says he's lowered the masts a bit. She
also has a regular cockpit with inside AND outside steering.
I'd like to see a discussion follow that would include some voices
experienced with water ballast which she has - I've never even seen it used.

I'll be looking forward to seeing that.

Several decades ago we chartered a CSY 37 for a couple of weeks in the BVI.
My opinion of the CSY 37, a cutter, was that she was a dog, but, tacking up
Drake's channel from Soper's Hole, we walked past one of the "character
boats," a schooner. Best I could tell, she was making about 180 degrees
between tacks. Maybe other schooners do better?

I have built a Jochem's Schooner and am preparing a "report" on my
experience with her during the four/five years of building, sailing and
repairing. I missed renewal of my MAIB subscription in March. Looks as
if I will have to make a call to Bob Hicks again...

I've always wanted to be a Schooner man. But building something with any serious accommodation like the ones that take tourists out up New England way just seemed expensively and experience wise beyond me.

Well I know where my plans money is going and I've already sent for the video.

Hi John,

The video can stand a lot of watching. You'll get an excellent idea of the strengths and weaknesses (if you read between the lines) of the boat.

One good thing about the video is that it's not a sales pitch, but shows things as they happen, warts and all.

For those of you who've never seen one, Susanne's videos are long and slow, and give you an excellent chance to observe what's going on. They don't rush you, but give you plenty of opportunity to see the boats in action. My fave is the Lily one, but the Jochems is pretty good too!

Does anyone know if she's made any other videos of Bolger boats?

Bill

Hi All -

Well, we were all made a bit more crazy with the recent upgrade to BIRDWATCHER, now I'm just nuts over the latest MAIB article on the JOCHEMS SCHOONER - design # 639. I've always wanted to be a Schooner man. But building something with any serious accommodation like the ones that take tourists out up New England way just seemed expensively and experience wise beyond me.

Here Uncle Phil has offered up what looks pretty ideal to me (it will certainly turn heads) Trailable, Leeboards that won't break up any interior accommodation, and an interior that offers the ladies an enclosed head (even if it is with a curtain, it doesn't interfere with the accommodations, 4 berths and a complete gally area all inside and very accessable. Well I know where my plans money is going and I've already sent for the video.

Lets here from you members with some pros and cons - - - how do you owners of Birdwatcher and Whalewatcher feel about her ? Likes - dislikes. Any opinions on how she'll sail ?
