Re: [bolger] Re: Jessie Cooper, As 29...twin keel?
You could buy a _lot_ of spare huge rope for the price of a pair of custom
bronze Meadowlark leeboard fittings! ;o) And if the rope breaks you can fix
it on the spot, wherever you are. There's something to be said for the old-
fashioned ways of dealing with boat fittings, they usually involve more
maintenance, and maybe less "efficiency" -- but lower cost and ease of
repair.

I cannot help thinking that the people with motor boats miss a great deal.
If they would only keep to rowboats or canoes, and use oar or paddle...
they would get infinitely more benefit than by having their work done for
them by gasoline. <Theodore Roosevelt>

They are loose when they on the windward side, tight on the lee side.
An intriguing Bolger boat was recently re-designed. I am a good 1500 miles
from my books, but it was designed for So Calif, being a big but trailerable
boat somewhat on the GB dory model. It started w/ a pusher dingy for power,
leeboards and a semi-Asian rig. The pusher is gone and the rest went thru a
major re-design.
Also L Francis Herrashof's Meadowlark sharpie has some nice boards.
I think the original Dutch craft had a thick rope w/ a stopper splice in the
end passed thru holes in both the board and the gunnel. Seems stupid but it
probably worked, tho you would want to keep some spare huge rope around.

Do you have any pictures? Was the substitution really difficult and
did the result meet with your expectations,ie. simplicity,

So, yes, they will work. And look damn good too.
I will give them the same treatment I gave the twin keels if you want.

Thanks to all for such quick response.
Someone mentioned leeboards...could this work as an alternative to
the bilgeboards on the AS29? I'm not sure, but I don't think JC has a
long enough flat side to hold them.
Patrick...greatful for assistance in my ignorance.

I suppose twin keels would be much easier on a metal boat, or a wooden boat w/
a metal structure in side.

Hi all...love this group, so much to think about...
Has anyone ever considered twin keels for JC or the AS 29. These are
two of my favorite designs, but putting a hole in the bottom for a
bilgeboard always makes me nervous..
Thanks, Patrick
