Carbon masts

Im stunned at how hard the mast builder is making it for himself. I
have 3 carbon masts. they are all 2nd hand sailboard mast i was given
by a sailboard maker. he said the were no longer any good as they had
gone "soft" . . This seems to raise alarm bells to me . He said the
mast get bendyer with use until they fail! and only last as long as
the sail that is cut for them. ( 2 seasons). . When I was building
the schooner the price guide I had from a spar manufacturer was $200
for the foremast and $250 for the main ( australian). They reckoned
they could probably match a reject spinnaker pole for less. That was
only 5 years ago. For a dinghy mast , unstayed , they are great but
ugly. The most enjoyment I have ever got out of wood working was
spending the morning making a pile of shavings and a mast . I waded
barefoot through it , the kids piled it up into a snowman. the smell
was awesome and lingered on my body for days. , and drifted all
through the house
Cheers all Paul
