[Bolger] Depoe Bay Wooden Boat Festival & Crab Feed

The world's smallest boat festival in the world's smallest harbor! <g>

I've noticed that several members of this list are in Oregon. I hope to see
you at the Depoe Bay Wooden Boat Festival April 29 & 30. It sounds like
this year's festival will be a good one, as of last week about 30 boats had
signed up. Here's some of what will be going on (from one of the
"organizers"):

"The Depoe Bay rowing club will provide free coffee and rolls both days to
exhibitors. Some tickets for the Ducky Derby on Sunday will be saved to be
sold on Saturday of the show in order to give you a chance to win one of
the prizes. We will offer exhibitors crab dinners Sunday afternoon
compliments of the show. This year's show will include a model boat
exhibit and a swap meet. The Depoe Bay rowing club plans to collect
donated items to sell for the swap meet and you are welcome to sell items
also. Also we have arranged for a free whale watch tour for exhibitors on
one of our whale watch boats, ocean permitting....

"During the year the rowing club has built and refinished four boats and
several of the young members have begun to row alone. We plan our own
exhibit including some boat building demonstrations. We hope you will
participate also. This year will be the beginning of the Depoe Bay Rowing
Cup. The Cup races will be timed races around the first buoy or in the
bay. The Depoe Bay club dory will be used by each participant.

"The Depoe Bay Coast Guard is planning some cold water survival
demonstrations. These will be of interest to everyone...."

Sounds like fun! The festival is quite low-key, the exhibitors are real
boat nuts and like nothing better than standing around jawing about boats.
The crab is delicious but a bit pricey (goes to a good cause though). The
festival is held down by the boat ramp, turn east just a bit south of the
bridge. It's really quite nice and peaceful down by the harbor, a nice
contrast to the touristy flavor of the strip up on 101.

If you've got a boat that you want to show contact Jack Brown at
541-765-2633, e-mailmjbrown@.... There isn't any fee, in fact
they bribe you with goodies to come! <g> If you don't want to bring a boat
come and gawk at the exhibits and talk boats.

Hope I see you there. I think I'm going to take my ratty 6-Hour Canoe and
see if I can unload it.

I cannot help thinking that the people with motor boats miss a great deal.
If they would only keep to rowboats or canoes, and use oar or paddle...
they would get infinitely more benefit than by having their work done for
them by gasoline. <Teddy Teddy Roosevelt>
