Re: [bolger] Re: Power sharpies (12 Step Program)
All the more reason to make sure the sea god(s) - whom you have angered migthily with blasphemous comments - are properly propitiated. You can build the perfect boat, but if the sea god(s) are angry she'll come apart the minute she touches the water (or when you're out in the middle of whatever body of water you're on). I'd rather pay protection money than have "Guido" pay me a visit!

OK, this is the Vietnamese way:
Gods here love the rice-whiskey (or is this whisky? ;) like stuff.
But unlike in Europe, they request that you drink together with
them, means you pour a bit into the water (or over the bow?) and then
all the by-standers drink the rest.
Smashing the bottle on a small boat. Do-able.
Reinforce the stem temporarily with a C-Clamp. Pack your bottle in a
strong plastic or fabric bag, so that the broken glass stays inside.
Break the bottle at the C-Clamp.
Now, does anybody say that the bottle has to be smashed first?
Or can we offer to the gods, then drink the rest, and have the bottle
finally smashed?
Note: I invented this procedure based on how the gods are served at
graves. I have no experience with Vietnamese boat launchings.
Cheers,
Stefan

Well, it depends on where your particular sea god(s) live. Being of Norse ancestry, I know that Thor happens to like a very fine Aquavit. Poseidon on the other hand likes a reseinous wine, and Neptune is very partial to good brandy (but they all savor 151proof Hudsons Bay or Bacardi rum).

Breaking the bottle over the bow is for ships. You will do major damage to your little boat with that bottle.
In my shipyard days we used special scored bottles that would break easy when some lady would hit it over the bow.
If you were to put alcohol in the water would that be a violation of the clean waters act?

I have no problem in using good stuff to christen a boat. However, the boats I build are small scale, champagne bottles are extremely stout, and even if I manage to break the bottle without damaging the boat, there is the matter of broken glass on the launch ramp. Perhaps pouring a glass of champagne over the prow would be sufficient?

Well, concerned folks up here in the frozen wastes of Canada are in
the process of forming a founding chapter for "Square Boats
Anonamouse" We are still laying out plans for our 12 step program
complete with a numbered building key.
So far we plan to begin each meeting with:
The Bolgerista Prayer
God grant me the sensibility
to reject the plans I cannot build;
courage to not change the plans I buy;
and wisdom to know the scale rule.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying each moment in my moaning chair;
Accepting uncured layup as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this strange looking boat
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He drew all things right
If I follow closely His design philosophy;
That I may be reasonably happy in this boat
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next
Design.
Apologies to--Reinhold Niebuhr
Then we will close with the following prayer from Proverbs:
Trust in the Design with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge Him,
and He will direct your building.
Peace, Nels

The last time I spoke with PB&F we talked about the
Tahiti's progress.
In a word, S-L-O-W.
This was pre-hurricanes last summer and none of the
hurricanes went through where the Tahiti was under
construction. She could be done and enroute to Tahiti
even now.
I'd like to know too.

like to hear it. I don't want to invade anyone's
privacy, but the some type of performance report would
sure be helpful, not just on the hull, but also on the
inovative features like the self-leveling seats and
the aircooled Deutz-plus-outdrive power system.

Also, Tennessee is well described in a chapter
of Phil Bolgers book _Different Boats_, out of
print, but available on the used book market,
and in many libraries.

One of the reasons PB&F don't have a portfolio of
designs is that Phil and friends have COMPLETED almost
700 designs. They've sketched countless others.
When you write or fax don't just say, "Please tell me
how much to send for a Tennesee study plan."
Say instead: "

I am interested in your Tennesee. I am also looking at
the Santa by Christopher Columbus, the HMS Surprise by

will help them decide which study plans and cartoons
to send you. It will also help them determine how much
time and effort to invest in their reply. If you've
clearly done some homework, you are more likely to buy
aa plan than someone who has just seen a "pretty
boat.")
I plan to build the boat in my back yard. I've
prepared the building site. I expect to begin as soon
as the snow melts which should be April 1st in
Neverland. (Setting a real date also makes PB&F feel
more confident that you really will build a boat and
really will buy a plan, perhaps from them.)
Be informative. Give enough details to allow them to

Fred,
Fax or write Bolger at
Mr. Philip C. Bolger
P.O. Box 1209

Fax: (978) 282-1349
I faxed him about Retriever, Fast Motorsailer, and Topaz.
I received a phone call the same night and discussed my wants and
within days I was mailed complete write ups, photos, & plan views of
all three boats.
I have faxed them several more times about other plans. Once I
waited as long as a week for a reply. It is less convenient,
contacting someone only by fax or post, but it does seem to work
just as well in the end.

Where I can get a Tennessee study plan?
Hi Fred,
Try browsing through the files and photos in the 5 Bolger groups on
Yahoo, Bolger, Bolger 2, 3, 4 and bolger4photos.
Most of PB's power sharpies are lurking there for you, and perhaps
more tham you've thought of to date. Like Minnesota, my personal
favorite.
Enjoy the surfing.

likeit's possible for Michalak's design. Since am
"shoping" for my next project, I thing it's rational to know what
designs are available on the market. Based on photos and descriptions
found on the web,Tennessee is on my short list. But because most of
Bolger's designs aren't on the web, how can I know Tennessee is realy
the best? Maybe another design would be better. How can I know?
When I wrote power sharpies, I meant instant-flat-bottom-power-boat
under 30 feet, like AF4, Tennessee, Sneakeasy, etc.
Where I can get a Tennessee study plan?

that was a-building in Florida, or if any others have
been built? She is a really neat, radical concept, I
think, and I would love to hear of some practical
experiences in her. Sam

I think what you are thinking about when you say 'power sharpie'
is rather, 'hard chined power boats'.
'Power Sharpies' as a class, is a bit of an illusion,
they break better into two classes, the flat bottom type,
like Lake Launch, Sneakeasy, Sharp Shooter, Tennessee,
Topaz, Idaho, Wyoming and Illinois.
Mostly, calm flat water, 'Riverine' boats.
...and then there are the 'displacement' types, like Dakota,
Windermere, Champlain, Lily, Sitka Explorer, Tahiti etc..
I think Bolger would exclude the shorter wider boats from
being called a 'sharpie' (which more properly refers a
long boat for her width), and doesn't actually imply a sharp chine.
The classic power sharpie might be a naval destroyer.

Be sure to post pics in the Michalak group photos section!!
By all means, contact Bolger. I've kinda concluded he is something
of an eccentric genius. Not Howard Hughes like, but more a
stubbornly independent fellow. Based on the numbering of completed
designs, there are around 600, ranging from canoes, to Sir Joe Banks,
and who knows what else. No one person could possibly 'need'
information on every design.
Hello everybody,
Am interested to know more about Bolger's designs. I read the book
Boat With and Open Mind but according to what I have seen on the Web,
it's just the tip of the iceberg. Where I can get a complete
portfolio(short description with study plan) of Bolger's power
sharpies (Tennessee et all.)? Should I contact Mister Bolger?
By the way, I'm finishing my fist instant boat: a Michalak AF4.
Maiden voyage: April 2005.
