Fast Cruising in Small boats
When I saw the message shown below from Dave Culp, I realized that a
lot of us that cruise about in small boats, fearful of the dreaded
spinnaker sails, might truly enjoy an alternative. Disclaimer: No, I
don't sell these things, I just enjoy them.....(grin).....
You might consider getting yourself an Outleader spinnaker
kite<http://www.kiteship.com> They are wonderful in winds above 10
kts across the deck and, besides being appropriate for fast cruising,
they are a great way to get home should you ever be dismasted.
<http://www.dcss.org/AAPT/AAPT.html> Note that in the pictures, AAPT
need not even have a mast up at all, they could launch the kite from
a spinnaker pole just as easily as from a block part way up the mast.

Check out these photos of a J24 *powering* along under a 72 meter
OutLeader in Sydney Harbor. Didn't know a J could throw a wake like
this, did you? ;-) Top speeds; around 10 kts.

My life seems to have evolved to be much like the "Words to Live By"
from "The Wind in the Willows"
"Believe me, my young friend (said the water rat, solemnly), there
is nothing - absolutely nothing - half as much worth doing as simply
messing about in boats. Simply messing about. Nothing seems really to
matter, that's the charm of it. Whether you get away or whether you
don't, whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach
somewhere else, or whether you get anywhere at all, you're always
busy, and you never do anything in particular."
