There was discussion of insulation among the steel boat builders on
Origamiboats that gave the general impression that not only was it
required, but it was required to be excellent. I chimed in to ask if
there was a problem with foam insulation in the bilge, and Brent Swain
(their resident guru) replied to the effect that there was not enough
air circulation bringing moisture to the bilge for condensation to be
a problem there. However, large parts of the "walls" of a sailboat
cabin are below the waterline, and cold water will cause condensation,
even thru a solid FG layup, much less steel. Above the waterline, it's
mostly a matter of heat transfer in hot conditions, unless you are
living aboard in the winter (in a cold climate).
The boat looks a lot better in these pictures than in Bolger's book, IMHO.

Shady Lady interior photos.
For those of you who didn't figure it out,
the letter 'l" is missing from the interior

Looks to me like the box keel has been either faired in or replaced with a deadrise bottom.
Anybody know for sure?

Yup, she's the "small motorsailer" on steroids. I'd
love to see her in ply construction, shrunk to 30'
with an 8.5' beam, with Bolger's favorite Duetz diesel
of 30 hp or so. A trailerable passagemaker! Hot dog.

For those who don't subscribe to the Bolger4Sale group,
you may not have noticed the posting which points to links
of photos of Shady Lady. Wow, what a great boat!
M. South, -- Please advise if there pictures available on-line to review.
Additionally, where is she currently stored? If not too far from North
Jersey, I'd like to have a look see.

I am reluctantly offering for sale the 40' trawler Bossanova, ex SHADY LADY
co-designed by Phil Bolger and Mel Traber. (See BOATS WITH AN OPEN MIND.)
This is a truly wonderful boat: full displacement, box keel, steel,
overbuilt
with almost 1000 gallon fuel tanks and 400 gallon water tanks. 135 hp Ford
Nor'east engine. Draft 4'9", beam 14 1/2 '. She has had a recent bottom
job
and the hull has been painted dark blue. In the 9 months I have owned her,
I
brought her from Florida to Maine without a single mechanical problem.
This
boat turns heads everywhere she goes with her large portholes and salty
looks. The accomodations are vast: 2 staterooms, two heads, a large
galley/salon
and a walk-around engine room with work bench. Tons of deck space for
those
who love being outside like me. Pilothouse has everything you need. The
entire vessel is designed with amazing simplicity and elegance.
This is truly a one-of-a-kind boat. I HATE to sell her but she's just much
more boat than I need as a solo mariner. My loss will be somebody else's
unbelievable good luck.
A survey from March 2004 is available as are lots of photographs. Asking
price$145,000. Many more details available on request.
