Re: [bolger] More Lexan questions

You know how hot the sun can get out on Fern Ridge, Bob. I'd go with tinted
all around, you don't want a greenhouse.

Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.

I had a project years ago for which Lexan was part of the solution. GE
sent me their spec sheets which had a lot of information that answers
most of the questions that are raised on this board about Lexan. I
would recommend contacting GE or go to a large library and consult
their "Sweets" catalog. If the library doesn't have Sweets then go to
your local architect or engineer office.

Hi Bob --

I'd asked the same question a few weeks ago on the Michalak group, and
Rick Bedard provided a sage response:

Depends a lot on whether you'll be keeping the boat covered or
uncovered for most of its life. I confess, though, that since I own a
pair of mar-resistant polycarbonate eyeglasses, and I've put them
through hell without a single scratch, I'm tempted to go MR on my boat
windows . . .

All best,
Garth

While everyone is into polycarbonate thought processes, I need assistance
in buying some for the BW2.

The stuff is available with a coating that makes it "abrasion resistant,"
also called, "mar resistant." This is claimed to add more UV resistance,
and resistance to Sun yellowing. But it roughly doubles the cost. I have
not seen numbers about the UV resistance, has anyone? If the issue is just
mar-resistance, I could learn to be careful for the price difference. Has
anyone had experience with this?

Also, I notice in 15 Sept 04 MAIB, Bolger says "We would build her with
untinted transparencies for better view out forward and in general in low
light conditions." What are peoples experiences here? I am presently
inclined to use clear on the sides and smoke tinted on the two over-head
panels in the rear compartment. For BW2, this seems to work out OK, since
the over-head panels can't be cut from the 2 4x8 sheets that make the
sides, anyway.
