Re: Staysail design

Had to go tohttp://sailing-ships.oktett.net/to look up staysail...
suspected what it was but didn't want to appear dumb.

Whether this applies or not isn't known but here goes anyway -

I also land sail in summer time. Most beach sailing rigs are the
traditional triangle sail with boom and relies on sheeting line
tension during sheet in to keep sail shape.

As a cheapskate, I use old windsurfing sails to power my chubby butt
up and down the beach. Windsurfing rigs are self-contained and
tensioned independently from the hull or chassis.

The boom tensions to the rear, a downhaul tensions the other
direction direct to the mast base. Since masts are fiberglass and
sail leading edges curved, you can tension them like a drum before
attaching to your hull/chassis/etc. The only impact on the hull is
where the sail stresses are transferred via stays or an unstayed
mast.

You can see a similar arrangement on the high-tech racers used for
the Olympics (J boats?) except the boom is in a sleeve with the sail
tensioned aft by the boom. The Sea Pearl uses a modification of this
approach with a dandy self-furling mast scheme.

One of these approaches might be beneficial to homespun boats. If
you want to know how I stay a tensioned, curved mast that rotates, I
can send you photos of my somewhat original solution. I would,
however, recommend the sleeved boom approach as being more sensible
and suitable for boats.

As a side note, while the exotic bat wing windsurfing sails look cool
and are very efficient and cheap or even free, a good, old fashioned,
triangle configured for smooth air transition over the mast and sail,
is only around 10-15% less efficient. Also remember, you can't reef a
windsurfing sail, only sheet-out.

Subject: [bolger] Staysail design

Dear John,
probably reading the others messages, I understood what MAIB is. " Messing about in boats" Magazine.
I rejoins what said by Stefan Probst, being my self a typical exemple of some one leaving in France and not having access to USA magazines.
Since you mention that a Staysail design was published recently on MAIB , could tell me how to procure a copy of ?.
My previous mail remains valid anyhow.
Best regards
Claudio
