mast building/micro
Wow, that was a lot of planing! It took me about 2 hours to taper
and eight side the mast. I finally have a 23' long main mast for my
micro that is fairly straight and has a few small tight knots in it.
It is also relatively evenly eight sided. I used a spar guage but it
is still not exactly perfect, but it seems close enough for jazz. I
notice that it bends much fore and aft if I place the mast in the
orientation shown on the plans. I am guessing that Phil Bolger
intended this when designing and will leave it as such. I am
wondering how other builders made out with this. did they have
trouble locating straight pieces of wood to scarph, and did it seem
like the mast was more flexible than normal? I guess what I am asking
is if this is normal,or not.
