Re: [bolger] Black Skimmer and possible Whalewatcher for sale

I'd be interested in Whalewatcher. David Lipsey

I would question the thousand or two man hours to build a new Black
Skimmer. The web site suggests 400 hours which is probably wildly
optimistic. I read somewhere that Mike O'Brian's orginal one came in at
800 and I think I could do that.

I just came across this message on the shallowwatersailors Yahoo
group. I hope it's okay to copy it here. Someone seems to be selling a
partially finished Whalewatcher -- a boat I've always thought was very

Jim and all,

Had a very nice conversation with Chuck Raynor about the Black Skimmer
he used to own. It was the original design with the self-draining
cockpit. He has tracked down the boat in a Virginia boat yard, just
sitting there. You probably could buy it for next to nothing. As
water has gotten into it some rot should be expected. But even so a
thousand or two man hours could be saved, in bringing the old boat
back to shape, instead of starting from scratch. Chuck an be reached
at 804-323-7707.

Chuck had been working on a Whale Watcher, before running into health
problems. Boat is partially done, he has all the specialized hardware
and new sails. He wants to sell the hardware and give the boat away.
Another possible project for a youthful and energetic tinkerer.

Someone on this group must adopt the Whalewatcher and finish it, just
so the rest of us can see the pictures and feast on your cruising stories.

All best,
