It was designed as a working vessel, not a pleasure boat and therefor
would have to maintain a certain schedule as well. The sail plan is
low with fold-down mainmast. I believe the mizzen contains the dry
exhaust if I recall.
The option of the chinese gaff rig was just in my imagination, but I
felt could improve the sailing to the point where one could sail
without the engine running if the winds were fair and the sea was not
moving too much. It calls for a big slow-turning non-folding prop, so
to have it turning and pushing water past the big rudder adds to the
sailing performance.
If one where to call the designers I would expect you would have to
have time to sit awhile and hear what the newest updates are for it:-)
Would make a nice little charter boat as well. It looks rustic
and "salty" yet can get into nooks and backwaters where a lot of the
more tradional boats could not.
And just imagine the patio area between cabins, and the wine cellar
you could have below it:-)
However the actual accomodation is not that spacious. The foreward
stateroom has standing headroom only under the hatch shroud I
believe. But one only goes there to lie down anyway:-)

Thanks, Nels--I never realized that Bolger4photos was
a separate group. I assume the Economy Motorsailer
concept is like the small motorsailer--designed
specifically to use both sails and motor. I wonder
how she would do as a straight motorboat--a la Shady
Lady--but with a smal steadying sail? Neat boat.
Does anyone have a copy of the DQ or MAIB articles?
I'd love to see them.

Hi Sam,
It is in the photos section of Bolger4Photos - not Bolger4
There is a small sketch in Bolger2 files in the folder "MS Cargo
Boat". Was written up in "Design Quarterly" and MAIB several years
ago.
It is actually a small cargo boat and is intended to have the motor
going continuously. It has an aft and forward set-up much like the
breakdown schooner in BWAOM with a hold in between and a box keel
with a small diesel in it.
One of my favorite designs.

Is this the economy motorsailer from the "folding
schooner" book, or is this a different design?

Peter, I can't get the link to work, and can't find
the photo in Bolger4. Could you try again? I'd sure
love to see that picture. Sam

The 30', cat-yawl-rigged economy motor sailer has always looked good
to me in drawings. I was happy to see a picture on the first to be
built in the Launchings section of the latest WoodenBoat mag. I've
posted a scan in Bolger4Photos photos section.
