Re: [bolger] Re: Double Eagle update

I have walked on with dories and stored them in a corner of the car deck
for nothing. I think it is one of those "it depends on the mood of the
crew" things. Nels, we (Fritz F and I) have been talking about a
messabout this summer. I would like to camp out on one of the islands,
maybe all the way to Shelter or put in at Eagle Beach and row and paddle
to Benjamen Island. There are at least 10 finished Bolger boats and
numerous other small rowing and kayaking craft in town. Do it before
crab season starts so we could stock up on Dungey's at Eagle beach for a
crab feed. If it goes well than it would be fun to try and put together
an "International" messabout in 06. And don't forget the most important
event of the summer, the launching of the "Double Eagle".

What about dog team from Skagway?

There could also be the option of driving or busing to Prince Rupert
I believe, and then taking the ferry?

Cheers,

Nels (Arvidson)
Wow! At last, a messabout I can afford to travel to!

I'm all in favor of the ``messabout in Juneau'' idea.

You'll get here either by boat or by plane. Since there's no road
access, you won't be traveling by bus, so I recommend you forget about
the bus and take the ferry. Make your ferry reservations well in
advance. Even in the summer, deck passage (it's four days from
Bellingham) is not horrifyingly high. Bringing a car or boat trailer
on the ferry is expensive in the summer, and you'd better make your
reservations for that very early.

I've seen deck passengers bring a kayak as luggage. Don't know if
they were charged extra for it, but suspect not.

I would like to propose that we start planning a Bolger Messabout for
Juneau AK - July long weekend 2006. Several ways to get there by
water or highway includng buses and ferries.

Maybe sponsor the founders as well:-)

Heh.

May the boatbuilding gods smile upon you. Good luck
with the NPS bureaucrats.

All my predictions about when such and such will be done on the boat
have been wildly off so far. I will know more later this spring. It
might be even late summer before the launch. I will announce here
with plenty of warning. At any rate I would be glad to have any
Bolger fans, from Juneau or anywhere, at the launch. Sometimes I
think I would like to launch in the middle of the night in secret in
case the waterline turns out to be in the middle of the windows or
some other drastic problem pops up.

It may be that I launch without the sail rig. My significant other is
working in Juneau and will be next winter also. The plan is to live
on the boat in Juneau next winter and I might finish the rig then. It
all depends on many many factors. I have applied for a Glacier Bay
Charterboat operator permit and they (National Park Service) are
really dragging their feet. If I hear that I will get a permit I
would have much more incentive to get the boat done as soon as
possible.

Fritz

Sorry for the shelter failure, I have had to stay busy getting snow off
the roofs of my sheds here, and Fritz Funk had his blow away while he
was attached, narrowly escaping injury. Who knew we would actually have
a real winter?

Fritz F and I were talking about the Double Eagle a couple of months ago
and I thought that you would be launching in 06 and we figured we would
all be there for the launching. Congratulations on your progress and a
predicted 05 launch date. Are you able narrow it down to a month yet?
Will you have masts and sails done?

If you are up for outside well wishers we sure would like to bring some
Juneau Bolger boats and builders over for the launch.

Hi Fritz,

Great work and glad I see you have your priorities in order.

1. Have a good sound system and music available.

2. Keep the website up.

3. Supply photos to the crazy dreamers:-)

I still drool over the photos of Woodwind. What a beauty.

Good luck with the spring weather,

Nels
My website is updated with some new photos. I have been working on
the interior and dealing with the collapse of my boat shelter from
excessive snowload. The boat wasn't damaged at all. The exterior is
basically finished minus paint. The collapsed shelter will mean that
I will remove it somewhat sooner than I planned as it is much
diminished and it will be difficult to work on the exterior. But I do
plan to launch this summer. Here is a link to the new page:
