Paint and Adhesives (was Polyester v. Epoxy)

Hi, All:

1)Polyester: I built a cedar strip canoe many years ago which was
sheathed in fiberglass set in polyester resin. I no longer have the
boat, but it held up very well under pretty strenousu usage when I
did have it. Mind you, I purchased the no-wax polyester resin,
catalyst, fiberglass cloth and soluble wax from a supplier
recommended by the Minnesota Canoe Assn. and followed the
instructions.

2)I've not use ACE Hardware "equipment paint". I did use ACE's "100%
acrylic" latex "porch and deck enamel" on my last project. It seems
pretty satisfactory to me. However, it has adhesive properties that I
found pretty amazing! I had bits of boat furniture, assembled with
screws after the paint was "dry" (6-7 days@ 55-60 F.) After a
summer's exposure to sun and rain,I had to remove and reinstall some
of the "furniture" to correct some deficiencies in wiring, etc. The
pieces of "furniture" were not terribly closely fitted together, nor
were they intended to be. Much to my chagrin, I found that the
various furniture bits, had glued themselves together so well that
they not only delaminated plywood on being separated, but pulled of
chunks of #1 pine as well! The paint wasn't inexpensive, but it cost
a lot less than epoxy.
