Re: Acrylic paint & masking tape

I too have found the pea green 'light' tape a far safer bet.

Hi Bruce, I had the same problem when applying my bootstripe to my BW2
hull (see Birdwatcher2, badbootsripe, in bolgerphotos4). Mine was a
paint compatability issue, so I can't speak directly to the problem
you had. I did want to pass along a helpful hint, which you may
already know, that I learned from an old professional sign painter. He
taught me a trick to get a crisp clean line and avoid "bleeding" under
the masking tape. Say you want to put a white bootstripe on a red
hull. After your hull paint is thoroughly cured, mask off the stripe,
top and bottom, then paint the stripe area with the same red paint you
used on your hull and let it dry. Reason? The paint that inevitably
bleeds under the tape is red, and won't show up. Then go back and
paint the white stripe, let it dry, then using a light touch and an
X-acto knife, score the edges at the tape/white stripe junction, and
peel off the tape. The light scoring assures that you won't lift the
underlying red, along with your white stripe. I've used this technique
over the past fifteen or so years with great results, though I must
admit that when I redo my bootstripe on my BW2, I'll probably use 1"
white automotive pinstripe tape. Tough stuff with tenaciuos hold. But
I thought the idea might help with your intended paint plan. Good
luck. Wish I was in Fla. right now!

Bruce--You might try a one of the easy release masking tapes--they usually come in an ugly green (think what happens when you feed a baby strained peas) and cost a lot more, but they seem to work pretty well. The other trick is to tape, paint, and remove the tape as quickly as possible--the longer you leave the tape on, the tighter it grips the surface.

Subject: [bolger] Acrylic paint & masking tape

I've had some bad luck with this stuff in the past. Including a final
coat almost totally peeling of my Diablo on it's first run.

So here's my question:

How long should I wait before applying masking tape over a fresh coat
of acrylic Tropical Blue so I can paint on the Flamingo Pick, also
scrylic, waterline?

I don't want the base coat to peel of wi' the masking tape an hour
later.
