Built a 3/4" to the foot model last night and am getting really
excited, what a cool project it is! She goes 100 kts just sitting
still on a table top.
I cut down on the amount of rocker PB had put in, then decided he
had it right and I was wrong so back to the original. The urge to
tweak the master's work is sometimes in error as in this case.
Hiking benches with floatation should make it almost impossible to
blow over. The downside of the concept being: if the lee bench
augers-in due to excessive heel, she would be apt to turn hard to
leeward (unless you can quickly sheet-out and rudder to windward)
followed rapidly by either a cartwheel or rapid morphing into a
submarine.
Hard hat and Mae West will be requisite until we see how she
behaves.

Be careful what you wish for lest it come true.
Have started making minor design mods utilizing what I learned about
sailboard physics when I was a boarder (younger, thinner and more
fit). The tube stays have been tweaked and proven on our
landsailing rigs.
I plan on making it 3-sided seating for sail
clearance, pushing the seating up and out a tad, adding hiking
straps, making seats buoyant (Making it self-righting I hope? Time
will tell) and using aluminum internal bracing to deal with twist
forces.
I plan evaluate her with a 6.5 meter, fully camber induced unit with
a movable pivot base to accomodate the curve of the mast with two
stay points. A sliding mast base will allow using different sail
sizes according to what works.
Since an unreefable, 12m is about 25% more area than the
Bolger plan, I expect it will prove to be too much sail except in
light winds. I am keeping my eye out for a used 9 meter in the
meantime.
Will post our results whether a success, failure or crushing
embarassment.

temptation to gold plate, build us one!
In scanning one of my Bolger books while awaiting my Selway-Fisher
Firecrest plans, I came across the sailboard/boat
design previously ignored that looks like it would plane
successfully. After looking at it with a 'what the hell?' attitude,
I suddenly remembered that brand new, 12 meter windsurfing sail
stashed in storage. Hmmmmm!
This sail must have been made for King Kong - six meters is a
handfull for most boarders. Paid $95 for it five years ago - a great
deal with absolutely no use in mind for it. Needless to say, I am
blessed with a patient wife. It has always needed a home,
tho'....maybe this is it.
By mating Bolger's design with the 12 meter batwing sail and the
rigid tube stay system I developed for our windsurf powered land
sailers, this puppy might be a really exciting project.
The book has one photo of a completed boat and Bolger notes several
have been built. Are there any Archaeopteryx builders in this
forum? If so, please advise on 'lessons learned' as the Bolger
editorial noted that the design should get builder tweaks.
