RE: [bolger] Paddle Design...Anyone?

Mark

First, an apology, because this isn't a design -- more of a word in favour
of my personal bias. I made a double paddle for my daughter that I am
fairly smug about, starting from a spruce 2 x 6 from the lumber yard.

To get the shape I wanted, and to get both ends the same, I made templates
of the curves of both the side and the face of the blade. With the
templates, I marked the lines on the 2 x 6, along with the shaft outline,
then cut it out as follows.

To start the curve on the face, I marked the line on the side of the 2 x 6,
then used a radial arm saw to make cuts almost to the line, an inch or so
apart. Then I cut close to the sides and shaft lines using a band saw
(although a good sabre saw or a hand saw would work).

The face bits between the cuts can then be broken out -- if you do them too
soon you lose the lines for the sides of the blade -- and you can start
shaving everything down to size.

I used a spokeshave and wide bladed chisel (1 1/2") to finish shaping the
paddle. I found it went a lot quicker and easier than expected. I think it
was finished sooner than a built up paddle with a ply blade would have been
-- there was no time needed for glue/epoxy to set. Spruce is a treat to
work, and very light, although it won't stand up long if used a pole on the
bottom as it's too soft.

One of the reasons I suggest this route is that I found making the paddle
almost more rewarding than building the canoe that it was for. That was a
tiny cedar strip, and after all the glass and epoxy work, working with solid
wood felt really great (I've promised myself that my next boat won't have
any epoxy or plywood in it). And the finished paddle looks better than any
plywood blade could ever look (my opinion). Total cost was $6.00 plus sales
tax.

I am thinking of building a pirogue for my Dad for Fathers Day.
Does anyone out there have a design for double paddle (a single
paddle will work also) that they would be willing to share?

Does not have to be real fancy, just has to work well.
I will also be trying the Titebond II (yes I will take the boat out
first) for the construction. I will keep the group up to date if I
encounter any problems with the glue.

Thanks,

Mark in MN.

You might want to consider Jim Michalak's Piragua;

Here is a list of pirogue plans:

I hope this helps.
