June Bug - Sailing

List,

My June Bug has been the most neglected boat in the world!!! After it was
built, it spent about 19 months and was not sailed, rowed or even taken out
of the yard. At last years messabout, Roger Harlow rowed her for the first
time!!! I rowed the boat on several occasions last year. This past winter,
I inherited a Pickup Pram sail made by Jim Michalak. I adapted that sail to
the June Bug last week. It sailed for the first time at our messabout last
Saturday. The sail is 69 sq feet where Bolger calls for 59 sq feet.

The rig needs some tuning in the halyard and downhaul areas, needs a
mainsheet block and needs to have the rudder redone, but it sails
marvellously! It has nuetral helm and sails will with 450 lbs of crew!It is
fairly close winded (95 - 100). The mast is a little limber. The entire
sailing rig, (mast, lee board, rudder and tiller) was built from SCRAP in
the garage. It all worked and worked fairly well. Good enuff that my son
has basically STOLEN the boat. We took it to the tiny lake in The Woodlands
tonite and it performed well and amazed the bystanders. Especially when
they found out the hull was under $100, and the materials were all lumber
yard - except for the sail.

A totally satisfying evening!
