Re: [bolger] Bolger Content for Decision

Check out Fritz Funk's boat page

He has done several kid boatbuilding projects.

Let me second that: Mice are wonderful, being small enough for kids
but large enough for adults who are carrying the remains of a few too
many Smittys and Maudites around their waistlines. :-)

The deadrise original Mouse is best, of course, but if the kids are
building it, you might consider the easier-to-construct Flats Rat
instead. Or, if you'd like the best of both worlds, how about the
Tortoise? It's from PCB ("said with some malice to be [his] best
design"), it's small enough to be kid sized, and there's an adorable
picture of a kid sailing one in Payson's second book.

I must say I'm a bit puzzled that you want to include a Bolger boat just for the sake of including a boat by the great man himself.

Isn't that kinda putting the cart before the horse? Like - "Here's a car I really like, and it has everything I want, but it's not made by Jaguar and I'd really like to have a car with a Jaguar badge."

As far as I can see the Mouses (Mice?) are perfect boats for kids that age (and older . . .) so why get hung up on the "designed by Bolger" label?

Of course, considering that, Pirate Racer would be the
perfect choice!
What you build will be affected by its intended use.

If you want a number of kids to be able to go boating at once, then
you will need (in the mouse boats) at least a 14 foot one. If you
want them to have individual boats, the smaller 5 to 6 ft ones(or even
shorter) will do.

For individual boats for kids in the Bolger boats, the tortoise or the
elegant punt or the nymph(more complex) would be ideal, but for
several definitely the brick or perhaps the windsprint (a little more
classic-looking double-ender).

Just my two cents. I've built the tortoise (from "Build the New
Instant Boats". I actually built it from the plans I got out of the
book which I checked out of the local library(Sorry Phil and
Dynamite). It cost about $45 in materials and turned out wonderfully.
A friend donated a lateen sail from a Sunflower and it got the little
square boat up on plane right away, even with my 250 lbs in it. It
went spanking along and left a gurgling, foaming wake.

But if you build a little one, only two small sailors or rowers can
ride, max. This is hard on those on the shore, because once a kid
gets out in one of these it's the very devil to get them to come back
in. Definitely enough boat should be built for everyone to
participate at the same time. If small boats, they can race them
against each other.

Either way, you're in for a little trouble followed by a whole bunch
of fun.

Fair winds for your Enterprise!

(three boats at least) If anyone has a suggestion for a small light
boat for us to build,"

Brick!

Super fast build, super fast to the fun of boating, super simple,
rows, sails and powers too. Unmistabkable Bolger Box boat, starts
dockside conversations everywhere! Plus you can join them into
schooners by adding the Grout unit.

Can do double duty as a:
Sandbox
Planter
Fish Pond
Car Top Cargo Carrier
Truck cap (would require increasing the beam, but think of the
potential fun!)
Cement Mixing Tub
Lenihan Windemere Launching Party Beer Cooler
and more!

H.H. Payson wrote _Instant Boats_, a book with extremely good detail
on the construction of the Bolger boat, Teal, a 12 ft row/sail boat and
a good beginners choice.
What a situation to face. I am planning a family boatbuilding
workshop for some children ages 6 to 12 where they can build a simple
boat and be on the water quick. so far we have seen and liked the
mouseboat and are stuck with that one in our heads, but it ain't a
bolger boat.
I feel that it would be only fair to seriously consider a bolger boat
for this project. (three boats at least)
If anyone has a suggestion for a small light boat for us to build,
please give me your 2 cents worth asap.
I plan to build one of them from 3mm marine from noah's and
incorporate handles into the boat for ease of use for the children.
Also I like the incorporated flotation in the mouse for safety. all
these children are water babies and are looking forward to the project.
Thanks for any comments.
