I have painfully acquired the lesson that just because something can

Dear Mr. Hector
Thanks for your intrest in our Bolger-boat-project. The Viking
Longship was build in our boatyard by a group of young adults being
part of a "State and local" program for unemployed people. The
launching took place after 11 month building time and was celebrated
under the eyes of Susan Altenburger, the girl-friend of Phil. We
followed the original plans in nearly every detail, but improved a
few things for reasons of available materials, building faults or
further licensing. As the boatyard owner and initiator of the
boatbuilding projects I bought the plans from P.B. and surveyed the
building process. The design is marvelous, absolute seaworthiness,
easily driven, fast and stylish in many ways, my fully respect to
naval architect Philip Thiel!
At the beginning no one dreamt of using the viking ship as a
passenger vessel like it is used today, my first choice buying the
plans was the possibility to easily transport and store the boat with
trailer measurements. You know, such boats become very expensive in
our area when they have to be moved by heavy equipment! With a total
weight under 2,5 tons, 2,5 m bredth and nearly 12 m length this
should be a low budget project.
Now things have changed, the employment programs disappeared, but the
boat has become an ambassador for city-tourism. The sometimes profane
animated viking theme is easily understandable for everyone, young
and old, and so we have charter groups from all over the country who
pay good money for 4 or 5 hours of traditional boating on the river.
With our boatyard we do the whole service and provide the crew for
the boat which is still owned by the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr.
Now with three years experience, I would change a few things in
construction. 1. Most groups are more than 25 people, we need a
bigger boat. 2. Our viking longship is clear varnished plywood and
ash laminated with epoxy, a real eyecatcher for the boat lover, but
this is not practical for 7 month hard charter use! 3. I would prefer
a self draining cockpit for the party, with waterproof air and
ballast compartments under, for easy cleaning and storage. 4. A small
folding mast tabernacle and "show mast" for the many bridges we are
passing every day should do!
If you are planning to build a boat for the same use, (I have seen
your homepage before you wrote me an e-mail and guess you are looking
for the same problem solver) I would like to share my experience and
maybe we can come into business!
yours sencerely

I've eMailed Willi, asking if he has construction shots and any
comments on the design, building or use.
I'll scan in the MAID article when I can and add it to the

Found it! Took a little searching in German on yahoo.de but it all led
to the only floating and in use Bolger Longship "Muwi".
If my German is correct, this version of the Phil Bolger longship is
for charter for up to 14 people for day use on the Ruhr at Mulheim,
Germany. Looks fun! Cool site too!
Can anyone in the group accurately translate German, all I can do is
find a Gastof and oredr a pils.

Just room enough for 14 stout rowers and a keg of Smithwicks. Anyone
want to charter her for a raid?
