Roger,

They have them on some elevators. Also they make antenna mast that
extend with air pressure. Some of these are sturdy enough to use as
mast. An inquiry on the amateur radio antennas news groups would
probably turn one up.

I would still worry about failure in heavy seas setting off a cascade of
events with very negitive outcome.

A Folding mast would be a lot easier to make and more reliable
thantelescoping. You would have a hard spot in a telescoping
mast where the two sections over lap and you would have
to make a hard spot to pin the mast.

A hinge wouldn't be as pretty but it would be a lot easier to
fix when it stuck than a telescoping mast.

A hinge near the base and sockets up the mast might
be the easiest.

I could worry about a telescoping mast failing and going
through the bottom of the boat.

Dear List members,
has anybody espied a successful (or otherwise) design for a telescoping mast.?
I'm thinking of the order of three 10ft sections, not a massive unit.
For use in trailering, negotiating low bridges, fixing jammed halyards etc etc.
Thanks in advance.

Perhaps someone could design a hydraulic mast. Pump some oil in the bottom
and the top goes up like a car jack! It would need some decent oil seals
though. Tell me if you find one please.
