I took an interest in this idea some years ago when it was featured in
either MAIB or Boatbuilder. The practicality of it is dependent upon
your ability to get most of the components for free, or nearly so.
Surplus prices for the motor or the foot can each amount to more than
the cost of an electric trolling motor.

Used electric trolling motors appear in the paper for as little as
$40. My neighbor just paid $400 for a foot to fix a 30 year old motor.
