Re: [bolger] Re: best way to order plans Or Buildng Costs and How to Guestimate

I have a friend in Britain who makes coracles out of
animal hides and sticks. Peter Faulknor would be happy
to make you one or to teach you how to do it.

There is a magazine for "wooden boat owners, builders and designers"
and now a society for "metal boat builders, owners and buyers". Is
anyone out there made of flesh and blood?

I don't have any special insight into what it is going
to cost to build a boat. Two boats built to the same
plans can have costs that are an order of magnitude
apart. Which you recognize in your "how long is a
piece of string" analogy.

There are rules of thumb about how much a foot of
waterline or a ton of displacement is going to cost
you. I've seen them but I don't know where they are
now.

George Beuhler <http://www.georgebuehler.com/> in
either his book or his design catalog, both of which
are good reading, says he began building one of his
boats with $50 in the bank. This is a boat that he
cruised to Mexico from Seattle. George is great for
getting yourself over the hump of indecision about
when to build your boat. Unfortunately some of his
designs will increase your indecision about which boat
to build.

George's designs all draw too much water for me. I
like PB&F's much better for their shallow draft and
other things. George's boats do look good, to my eye.

George has attended at least one of the Metal Boat
Society's annual meetings. This year it appears that
they've imported Dudly Dix from South Africa who also
has some interesting designs.

<http://www.metalboatsociety.com/festival.html>

George is an interesting guy and easy to talk to. As
I'm sure is Dudly Dix.

If you are interested in building a metal boat or just
thinking about it, the Metal Boat Society is for you.
Going to their Festival could save you a lot of head
aches, time and trouble, even if you do decide to
build a boat. It is also interesting to meet mere
humans who have built boats with out the intervention
of multinational compaies or magic, which is one of
the reasons we all hang out here.

Point taken Roger,although I don't currently have a
problem with a SO.Although I know it's a 'how long is
a piece of string' type question I would have thought
that the basic materials quantities and specs ought to
be available for the hull - which is what I would be
after.Although most of the cost of the boat would be
spread over the construction period I would have
thought that the material cost for the hull would come
in a fairly large lump at the beginning - certainly in
the case of a steel hulled boat like Weston Martyr.

You're building because you like to build boats and

A friend, building an airplane, said he had to set
aside twice the cost of

That's what they did with Weston Martyr but I need a
bit more information to estimate costs which I would
hope to get from a study plan.Suppose I could ask for
the specific information though

Typically they will give you a fax, or snail mail
xerox copy
of a magazine article about the boat you are
interested in,
typically from the magazine _Messing About in Boats_.
Also sometimes they will give you a color xerox of
any photos they might have a boat built to the plans.
[In addition to a short handwritten letter.]
I have never heard of them selling study plans.

I think it took about 6 weeks when I wrote but the
letter contained a cartoon drawing of a shorter

I would like one for estimating purposes for Weston

They could be cruising. Another common problem
is that your 'return fax number' is illegible or missing.

I usually use snail mail, and they have always
replied promptly.
I wasn't dis ing them, I am surprised that you can expect them to
respond in a few weeks. I just thought they might take some time to
relax and try out some of their stuff.

cheers

Hey there now!

Plans from the Bolgers?

I think that they are really busy,

I haven't had a response from Phil or Sussanne for over 18 months or so now when I sent my last letter asking about the progress on the design they are doing for me!@!!!!!!!

Be patient, please....great art does'nt happen overnight...so to speak!!!!!!!!!

If you're in a hurry, buy some poorly designed mass produced fibregalss or aluminium boat!!!!!!!!

Do you send money order, check or what? How do you find out how much
plans are if now one will answer the phone? Do they mail you back,
fax or call?

anybody know.
