Thanks Jon. I will try it that way. Right now don't have any intentions of
being a production boat manufacturer. I am not too worried about resale
value. I enjoy building the boats as much as I enjoy using them. I just want
to be sure I can sell them instead of having to cut them up to make room for
new ones.

If you register/title them originally to yourself, for your own use, and then subsequently you sell them you have no concerns. When you start building them solely to sell as a business you need a MIC.

I don't believe all backyard boats have near zero value. If a vessel is well made and not totally unconventional in its looks there is value to be had. But I doubt any of us would be happy with the hourly pay scale we'd realize. Then again you would not like enjoy the depreciation you'll realize selling nearly ANY boat you buy new and then sell.

I just bought a well made amateur built Shell Swifty 15 and got a heck of a deal. In fact I believe the seller undersold it by nearly 50%. I suspect all too common an occurrence. I think as the traditional boating market continues to decline and venues like eBay develope amateur boats will become more accepted.

That and a buck may still get you a coffee in some places.

Speaking of resale value of backyard boats does anyone have experience
with obtaining a MIC from the USCG lately. I don't really want to
start my own business, per say, but my room is limited so I will have
to keep selling to make room for new builds. Can I keep selling off my
backyard built boats [after I have registered them myself] without
much trouble.
