Re: [bolger] Re: I'm not dead!
IIRC you used to be a squirt boater. Maybe you should just teach her to do
pivot turns, splats, mystery moves, screw-ups, and cartwheels. ;-)

I took my daughter and the Klamyak (tm) down to the lake for a test
run. I wanted to see how it floated her before undertaking the time and
expense of finishing it (carpentry was but a few ours and some odd
scraps of wood; glassing, painting etc always take me twice as long and
costs twice as much as anticipated.)
It turns out I cut the lines too fine. It floated her, but just barely.
Sleek looking indeed (as I had wanted), but with only an inch of
freeboard, as she gained the confedence to take more authoritatitve
strokes, she'd dip the rail, eventually swamping the boat.
As looked at her floating empty and admired her rakish lines, I
realized what I had done. I drew the boat from the water line up, with
no hull below the water to float her when loaded. I wonder if this is
typical beginner's mistake?
At any rate, Maggie much enjoyed the Klamyak (tm), even if it was a
rather unforgiving little boat. I'm going to re-built, but rather than
raising the sheer, I'm going to try lowering the chine. About two
inches should do it (that'll be another cubic foot of displacement.)

Well David keep the faith and I promise that if I can break away
from my writing and tools I would come back east and help you build
the boat just supplying my labor, experience and the tools you do
not have. All I ask is a space to sleep and cook my meals. I am
sure we can go twice a fast in the correct building of the I-60 you
want. And if Susan needs help we can help her also. So have no
fear you can have my help

Don't slip into a terminal depression about someone else's problems.
Finishing the I60 plans is PB&Fs problem, not yours.
Yours is what to do until they arrive.
All things come to those who wait, and send begging & bitching letters
with great regularity.
In the meantime, build something else.
Don't sweat the little things. Your biggest problem ever comes once you
have the plans and actually have to build it.

I have to confess that at this point I'm past dejected about the I60.
Never mind the money (which is trivial in comparison to the cost of
building the boat, but a rather stiff bill for disappointment) there's
the time and enthusiasm that we set aside for this project; some of it
salvaged, but some lost forever. That (in part) explains my long
absence from a community of which being a part has enriched my life.

FBBB,
I've just finish another Gull, put together from pieces leftover from
Sue and my Gullapalooza a few years ago. It's paint red, just like the
first one.
I carved a couple of oars for it out of a lumberyard 2x6 and they
didn't come out half bad.
I also just build a 1/2 (96"x 15") scale Klamyak (tm) for my daughter.
It's a sharpie/piro/kayak hybrid of my own design. Encouraged by the
oars, I made her a little double bladed paddle out of hunk of clear
cedar that's been taking up space in the backyard.
No good news on the Insolent 60. Nothing I do seems to be able to
motivate Mr and Mrs Bolger to finish the design, and I've all but given
up on it. I thought we'd be under construction Summer of '03, and now
here's the Summer of '05 slipping away.
