Re: [bolger] Birds mouth Mast

I would expect the moisture content of the wood and that of the air to
equalize rather quickly.

To have significant condensation would require a constant replenishment of
the humid air carrying the moisture in. With a sealed chamber like the
hollow of a birds-mouth mast, what you get is what you have.

In my opinion, "condensation" is a much over-rated hazard. For years,
aircraft operators who found water in the gas tanks blamed condensation. I
did a rough calculation and decided that there was no way for more than a
very few drops to form. My personal experience is that I have found water
in the fuel only when: the plane was tied down in the open during a rain
storm (leaky gas caps), or, the gasoline vendor had water in his supply
tanks -- rather common with gas trucks parked outside in the rain and/or
those with underground tanks.

The sample mast section I built had enough epoxy smeared around inside that
the whole question seems moot anyway.

Hello Paul,
Great when your done can you make me one to? My micro mast laminated
solid d/f has a split in it. It sits outside under a tarp on top of
the micro. I think the heat dried it out and caused the crack. I
haven't inspected to closely yet. I was thinking I could just fill
it with epoxy and try clamping it. Or just build a new mast. I would
like to put a tabernackle on instead of having to step the mast each
time. So I guess I'll have to decide before I build a new mast.

Was wondering what some of the experienced mast makers do?
Is it common when building a birds mouth mast most people precoat
the inners?

sounds like a good argument for sealing the inner walls of the mask, perhaps
easiest to do prior to assembly, but it seems I read somewhere that someone
loaded a sponge up with varnish or epoxy and pushed it through a glued mast
to do this. I've got one more mast to do for Micro, the 26-footer (in my 40'
basement!); gonna keep this in mind.

Hi Todd,

I'm sure it would.

As long as the bottom of the mast was left open it shouldn't be a
problem.

Hi Todd,

I'm sure it would.

As long as the bottom of the mast was left open it shouldn't be a
