Re: Boat engines??

Piwakawaka has an intriging shape. I like the stern treatment in
particular. I have just finished modelling an aluminum, fantailed,
shoal draft varient of a Selway-Fisher sailboat. Having done three
varients for stern treatments already, I might go back today and
change the stern similar to this steamer hull.

The classic look of those elegant, gaff rigged racing yachts with
their perched, tapered fantail sterns is a personal favorite and if
it
helps smooth the exit and reduces turbulence, all the better.

Also, consider making her out of aluminum. The cost is a little
higher, there is a small weight penalty but she will last forever if
not left in salt water year round.

Dave
Paul Fisher has an amazing collection of steam launches - you are
sure
to find something suitable or close to it. There are also resources
like:
- A Yahoo Selway-Fisher group
- Regional steam groups, I know of a very active one here in the
Pacific NW.

If you join the SF group, you will find Paul very active on the board
with advice and answering questions. He is also very good about
making
mods to plans and very responsive. I bought his Firecrest plan and
he
was good enough to hand draft a Gunter sail plan for it.

There are lots of designers out there with excellent hulls but when
you
want chicken, go to KFC. Want a steam launch? See www.selway-
fisher.com

Dave Godsey
James--My impression is that the NZ designers are a fairly collegial group.
Stuart responds to e-mails. I recently bought a set of plans for a skiff
from him. The plans are complete, nicely drafted, and Stuart's version of a
flat bottomed boat includes more framing than many designs (which, given the
inherently limp nature of plywood, is a good thing). The only drawback is
that he requires a certified check in payment and, even with airmail, it
takes about 3 weeks from order to delivery.

Piwakawaka looks like a handsome but simple boat to showcase a small steam
engine. If you need a more burdensome boat, you might check
www.selway-fisher.com for "Fanny the Fan Tail Launch".

I am intrigued by steam power, but I think it takes more planning and
preperation than the impulse boating I prefer.

Have fun.

Interesting that this boat (Piwakawaka) is listed under Stuart Reid
when I always thought it was one of John Welsford's designs. After
all, it is listed on John Welsford's web site:

http://www.jwboatdesigns.co.nz/plans/piwakawaka/index.htm

But now that I try to read the signature on the bottom of the sketch
for this boat, it sure looks like S. H. Reid to me. Maybe JW is
helping Stuart Reid to sell his plans by listing them on the JW site?

Bolger did a small steam launch I think. Don't remember more than that.

If you go to www.woodenboat.net.nz, click on designers, and click on Stuart
Reid, you will find plans for "Pikawaka", a flat bottomed, plywood boat for
small steam engines. Might meet your needs.

How much power and how much weight (all up with boiler, etc) would
that be? Us amateurs have no idea.

Lot's of Bolger hulls might work, but the accommodation would need to
be rearranged since steam engines usually end up in the middle of
things where PCB usually puts the people. If you are talking one or
two horses, PCB would probably suggest a hull like Lily, the electric
boat.
For steam, most people think of a heavy-displacement launch but
Bolger, being Bolger, designed Firebrand, 26'6" x 4'3" x 1,120 lb
displacement, with lines similar to, if not identical with, his
planing launch Sneakeasy.

The engine shown is a 15 hp Panther Junior but expected top speed is
12 kt with 6 hp.

A nice design feature are the paired condensor boxes set into the
bottom of the hull. Enough details to build her in 30-Odd Boats.

Hi

Don't know if PCB&F have ever designed any steam
launch hulls but if you try the Selway-Fisher site
you'll find a few there.
