RE: As 19

Having the designer identify a design as esthetically challenged
gives one great leeway in attempting to "improve" things. I have
spent more time doodling with an old set of AS 19 plans I bought from
Bernie way back when than any other full set or study plans I've ever
had. Here are some ideas I've thought of:

1) Forget the flat deck: Build the deck on the sheer line. Add toe
rails if you want. This will give you greater righting moment in a
knockdown situation. Think of Mary Jane.

2) Do like Bruce suggests and put a Navigator cabin on it. Or Move
the Navigator cabin back to cover the cockpit, and leave the front
deck open for lying about. Build the cabin up from the sides.

3) Put Michalack type leeboards on the sides. Put weight in them to
gain a little more righting moment.

4) Maybe make the gaff sail a junk sail. Make it so you could sail
from the covered cockpit area.

In the end I didn't build. Its too big for where I am, and too small
for where I'd like to be. Just can't leave well enough alone, I
guess.
