Bruce,

You're saying you don't want her mother to have bright red (or
orange/green/etc.) hair? You old stick-in-the-mud.

You misunderstand, I am encouraging her to get bright
red hair dye, [her mother is another story].

Yes, I couldn't agree more. I had a 'vision' yesterday,
that I need to do some airbrush work on the hull
sort of along the lines of this:

Bob,

Many years ago, the U.S. Department of Transportation ran some test on
the visibility of objects in foggy conditions. Yellow was the best
with white the next best for visibility under those conditions.

Hi Bruce, my teenager is 16 going on 40. From my experience I'd like to respectfully suggest that there's no better time than now for your teenager to have bright red hair, or her father to have a bright orange boat. It's only dye and paint... better she's red now and gets her Ya's Ya's out than at age 50. And better for you to have the orange boat she/they like now, than when youare in your 70-80's. Or maybe I've got it all wrong, and there's no age limit to personal expression! Above all, enjoy the journey!!

Yellow is not my favorite color either, but I am painting my Bantam yellow.
Let me explain why.

Dark green in my favorite color for a boat, but it absorbs too much heat,
which is not good for the Epoxy.

My next favorite color is blue. I could use a light blue which would not
absorb heat as much.

Blues and white and green and grays are colors of water.

When I had a big steel hulled sailboat I did not care. When I have a boat
built of 1/4" ply, I want to be seen. There are too many stories of boats being
run over by other boats. It could still happen, but at least with a bright
yellow boat, you are really visible.
That is why the traditional color of foul weather gear was yellow. Now days,
"fashionable" people are buy theirs in blue and white. Good luck to them
being spotted if they go overboard. I will stick to yellow.
A plus is that since only the hull is going to be yellow, not the decks, I
won't have to see it when I am on board:) Only other looking at it will have to
get past the color!

If that's the worst your daughter wants to do, you're lucky :-).

The bandwidth problem caught me too. I suppose the solution is for
everyone here to join Bolger 5 and senda lots of dummy messages in
that Group.

A friend of mine had a beautiful deep red ski boat. That thing was HOT! To
the touch that is. Orange would not be much better IMO.
A good compromise for an open boat is to paint the topsides a deep color and
the decks and insides with a light (but not too bright color) to keep things
cool enough to sit on. There is a reason a lot of older boats have gray
seats and floorboards!

Absolutely. A Bolger box need not conform to anybody's preconceived
notion of what a boat should look like. My AS-29 is painted a color
called "Lush Grass." I picked it 'cause I'm partial to green, and this
is a particularly rich green. It does have one major drawback. It
soaks up heat from the sun like crazy, to the point I'm considering
adding some insulation inside.

This may very well be the reason so many boats are white...

The yellow on this AS-39 is not to my taste, but then I don't have to
sail in it. The level of detail and the quality of finish is top notch.

Well done.

Yahoo throttles the 'bandwidth' of small groups (low levels of
enrollment.) So, wait a day or two and I bet you can get
back in to see the photos.

Regarding the color yellow, I have several thoughts.

Choosing a color (scheme) is one of the toughest parts
of building boats for several reasons IMO.

For the most part, it is purely aesthetic, and tastes vary.

The _'what *real* boat should look like'_ constraint doesn't
apply to a Bolger box boat, and why should it apply to
the color either?

Looking around the marinas where I live, essentially all
the boats are white, and is it a coincidence that they
all also appear to be stamped out of plastic using
the same factory mold? Conformists?

Also, the color on a small paper color chip sometimes
does not scale up to full size so nice. Witness the
turquoise colored paint on my neighbor's house.

This is all relevant to me, as choosing a color to
paint my Topaz Spyder... well, a big reason for the
boat is the 'look cool at the lake' mandate emanating
from the teenage kids I hand around with. It needs
to conform to an ethereal 'cool' factor, but I cannot
stomach the overpowered big hair/testosterone boats
and jetskis so prevalent {and which the kids see as
cool}. A back twist is that my kid wants to dye her
hair bright red, and she wants the boat painted bright
orange!

Life.
Interesting bug seems to have taken up residence in Bolger5. I went
there to look at the new LeCabotin/Anemone pictures. The first group
of pictures up to 22 I could look at, but 23-27 - I got directed to a
screen that said I didn't have the authority to view those pages.

When I went back to the main "Files" menu, I could look at or access
the first 2/3's of the files. When trying to access the rest, got the
same message on and wasn't allowed in to files that I could access
even yesterday.

Someone changed something or Yahoo is having hiccups again.
