Don--I generally build a model by tracing the panel shapes onto posterboard
with carbon paper. Cut out all the pieces and assemble it just like the
real thing using masking tape. The exercise gives you a real good idea of
how the process works, uses really inexpensive materials, and produces a 3-d
rendering of the boat. The resulting model is not real great (you probably
will not display it), but it is a useful exercize and I have 3 or 4 sitting
around my FROG.

Another option I might be leaning towards is to build a BEE since
that gives one the opportunity to try the step sharpie building
sequence on a much smaller scale, with lighter plywood and not even
any scaring of sheets or internal framing. Plus it gives some
practice in tack and taping.
Also I received my copy of the "Bud" McIntosh book, "How To Build A
Wooden Boat", yesterday. So far I have just browsed through once
again as I had read it some years ago. Excellent information on
laying out from offsets, making a lead keel, fairing the hull, spar
and deck beams and what I enjoyed most was how he builds his hatches
and other deck joinery.
Also helps me understand what that Tyson group is showing us about
how they build boats over there in Tasmania:-)

A red one.
Contains the plans for Hawkeye. I spent about an hour perusing them
and reading the sequence of construction. They are much more complete
and professional that the plans I've received for the Michalak AF4-G,
or Spearfish 12. Bolger puts out a high quality product.
Prior to the tube's arrival, I was thinking building the Hawkeye as a
Bonefish was not a big deal. Now, knowing that none of the drawings
contains a set of dimensions that will apply to my boat, I feel
intimidated by the challenge.
Perhaps a few more hours, and some more time with Hulls.exe will raise
my confidence.
I also think it may be time to build a Pirogue as a confidence boost,
then maybe even the Spearfish 12 w' my 13hp Briggs for power.
