RE: [bolger] Motors for the Topaz
Hello group. I'm generally not one to get on a soap box, especially not
being new to the list. However, I must comment on this situation. I am a
full line Honda Marine dealer in Washington state; very close to the
Canadian/U.S. border. I am very familiar with the issue of buying motors in
Canada and bringing them into the U.S. I'm all for saving money, especially
on boat stuff but there are two important issues here. One, from 1998 on,
all outboards imported to or manufactured in the U.S. must have a sticker
affixed to the motor stating compliance with EPA regulations for the year of
manufacture. Most Canadian motors don't have the sticker and are not legal
in the U.S. Second, you have no warranty (currently 3 years on all 2000
model year Honda's) on a motor purchased in Canada and brought into the U.S.
Honda has made this perfectly clear and in no uncertain terms to all their
dealers.
Respectfully,
Les Lampman

For those who are doing power, as in motor boats, we just made a great deal
on a honda motor. Two things are required here. One, you must live in the
US and not be a Canadian citizen. And second live close to the Canadian
border.
Today the exchange rate reached 48%. We called Esquire Honda in Sault Ste.
Marie and wire money for a 75 Honda. The price of course was very good
this way. No duty, no tax. And about $3500 to 4000 less than we can get
locally. And 2000 plus less than we can get anywhere in the states.
For an example, a 15 hp elect. start short shaft right now can be had for
1471.
I just put a scale under the tongue of the trailer with the boat on it.
Then loaded 375 lb. of cement blocks where the engine goes to find out if
the trailer will balance. I have about 170 lb on the hitch and think this
should do provided I don't put an overmuch of gas in the aft tanks. I have
no firm knowledge as to how much wht. should be on that tongue to haul well
and am open to suggestions. At this point, I can't extend the trailer as I
have run out of frame and the tongue is a heavy tube in a fancy surge
break.
thanks Brad
