Re: [bolger] MEK in paint - Final clarification needed!
A change of direction for this thread if I may. Any recommendations for sources
of cheap fiberglass supplies on the west coast for shipping to Alaska?

David, I really know nothing about MEK-P or polyester fiberglass, much less
catalyzing latex paint... I would not catalyze more than I would use in a
session, though. Sounds ripe for experimentation before putting it on your
boat. The MEK-P is cheap enough to be tempting, keep us informed on your
results. BTW, the Fiberglass Coatings catalog is well worth the price (free
on request!); it has some short how-to pieces and technical specs (most on
polyester fiberglass and related technique) that may be useful, about 90
pages total in the catalog as I recall. I have ordered about $300 worth of
material from them yesterday, will report on their delivery and such, some
of these mail order deals really stick me with shipping costs etc.

Am I correct in assuming that this cross linking that MEK P sets up in latex
paint necessitates using up all paint that is catalyzed with the stuff? Meaning
don't put a teaspoon in my gallon unless I'm going to use the entire gallon?
Thanks,
David
And thanks for the PDF - the clear is the most likely variety to use I assume.

It is my understanding that MEK-P, although you can indeed get it, is
one of the fastest ways to go blind. Protect
yourself from any splashing and BE CAREFUL. I wonder if that Bondo
catalyst would work, and I'm really curious how this MEK-P trick
works, although I'm sure I'm not enough of a chemist to understand
the
answer.

Here's the MEK-P catalog as a pdf, 800 telephone no. at bottom

Chuck, I have a catalog from Fiberglass Coetings, Inc with several varieties
of MEK-P. I'll try to scan it and send to the list...

Hi Everyone,
I have been following this thread with much interest. I'm about ready to
paint my F.S. This thread, however, has been a bit confusing. This is what
I've picked up, is it correct?
1) MEK P is what we want to use with our latex paint.
2) MEK is the other stuff with nasty fumes that the military doesn't even
like, "super acetone."
3) One teaspoon of the MEK P into a gallon of latex is the correct amount.
4) The Florida address of the supplier (earlier in the thread) is a supplier
of MEK P.
Anything Else I left out that all should know?
Chuck Correia, in the beautiful CA sunshine, recovering from a head cold,
madly working on the house chores for my wife while sick at home, so that
this weekend can be all about my F.S. Fair Winds!
