Re: Diablo Questions...

I second the motion. We've got four Bolgers and several production
boats in the family, and the Diablo gets the most use by far. Mine
is
three feet longer than David's, with a beefed up transom and a 40-
horse. It goes like a scalded dog, and is well-mannered to boot. If
you live near Long Island Sound and want to take a test drive, come
visit. We're in Bronxville, just north of NYC, and we drop the boat
in
the sound at the slightest excuse.

my best suggestion to you is:
"Go for it!"

I love this boat. I was trying to sell it during the fall and
winter,
but my children talked me out of it. If you want to take a field
trip
someday, contact me further and I would be glad to have you take it
for
a spin. 3 hours up to Boston? An afternoon of Buzzard's Bay striper
fishing?
The hull took me approximately a 40 hour work week to build. Not
including painting and glassing (not in that order). I used 1/4 inch
AC ply for the sides, and 1/2 inch for the bottom. It has been fine
so
far. This is Diablo Generation 2 because the first one was built of
luan. Do not use luan under any circumstances unless you really
enjoy
swimming long distances. Total cost was about $300 including glass
and
epoxy.
Glassing the boat sides and bottom has made it relatively
carefree. I paint the insides once a year after pollen season. I use
a
10hp longshaft Johnson on it. It will plane with two aboard with
this
motor. I think a 15 hp longshaft would be perfect.
The only drawback to the boat is its light weight and the lack of
a keel to prevent it from blowing around at slow trolling/motoring
speeds. I put a 1.5" spruce keel down the middle and terminated it
2'
from the stern to allow the water to exit the transom correctly. I
am
not sure how effective this is.
The bow seat is a perfect casting platform! Good luck.

Folks,

I am considering building a diablo for inshore flyfishing on Long
Islands Great South Bay and Fire Island Inlet. I have a number of
questions and would greatly appreciate any feedback that anyone could
provide concerning this boat. Here goes with the questions:
Approximate cost, time to build, difficulty to build(I have built a
S&G rowing dory, thoughts on sheathing in epoxy & cloth?, optimum hp,
stability, custom layouts for flyfishing(ctr console),anybody look at
a San Juan Dory(40 wooden boats) or Gardners 16ft Semi Dory(Dory
Book) compared to Diablo?, trailer ability? As you can see, I have
lots of questions, but would like any feedback at all. David Jost,
I'd like to hear about your deciding on Diablo and performance
thoughts, as we might use it in the same way. Thanks all. This Boat
occupys quite a bit of my thoughts daily and I'd like to be 100% sure
about it prior to starting. Thanks very much.
