and frames, it would be definitely possible to build a boat with the
lines and details of a Chebacco without plans.
Of course, you would almost certainly encounter several headache
and re-do's that would far exceed the cost of the plans.

Just a bit of clarification - Payson sells the hard-chine Chebacco plans only. You need these plus an additional drawing from PCB to build the lapstrake version.
A Chebacco needs 20-odd sheets of 1/2" ply, plus several gallons of epoxy, glass and other stuff, just for the hull. That's going to set you back at least $1500, and probably then some. Add sailing rig, OB, trailer and you can easily double that - even going the cheapest route.
Against that background the cost of a set of plans is pretty tiny.

Hi Harry --
I think the $60 plans available from Harold Payson are for the
stitch-and-glue "Instant Boat" version only. He doesn't sell the
lapstrake plans.
About five or six years ago I faxed Phil Bolger to ask the cost of the
25' lapstrake Chebacco plans, back when I could think of nothing else
-- and they were $300 then. So I'm guessing that plans for the
19-footer will be in that range now. If Wayne can save $100 on plans,
that may wind up being a substantial percentage of his overall costs.
He's a professional woodworker with excellent access to scrounged wood
-- so I'm guessing he'll build the least-expensive but nicest
Chebacco ever made . . .

If the original purchaser has already used up a lot of time asking

Also, I suspect that it is unsaid but implied that Dynamite
Payson is obligated to field most of the 'simple' questions that

In the case of my recent purchase of Topaz Spyder plans, I can

my plan purchase of $300. I got a heck of deal at that!

If the $60 for a set of the plans from Payson is a sticking point he
might find the cost of building one insurmountable.

My friend Wayne wants to build the 19' lapstrake Chebacco. He was
wondering if anyone had a set of (unbuilt) plans for sale.
He's on a tight budget, and trying to save every possible dollar. . .
. otherwise I'd send him straight to PCB.
