Re: Designs for Boatbuilding

Wooden Boat recently did a three-part article on building the
Caledonia - a few years ago they did the same for Grey Seal. There is
enough information presented in both series to build either boat.

It only has a reference to the size and cost of plans on the Caledonia yawl. Nothing about the grey goose. Sorry.

She was designed in 1961, and must have been built in 1961 or 1962.
Perhaps the recent owner acquired her in 1980?

Just a quick note of blatant commercialism. I've been cleaning my
bookshelf and have a few nautical books up on Ebay. The most relevent to
our group is the "Designs for Boatbuilding" by Ian Oughtred. It's a few
years old but references a large number of designers, plans and contact
informations. I don't have the URL handy, but just do a search in
Nonfiction books and it should be easy enough to locate.

They say the boat was built in 1980, but The Folding Schooner and Other
Adventures in Yacht Design, containing a chapter on Blackgauntlet II, was
published in 1976... Nice looking boat anyway.

What is more pleasant than a friendly little yacht, a long stretch of
smooth water, a gentle breeze, the stars? <Billy Atkin>
I second that!
I'd like to hear about the differences between BG and BGII as well.
Thanks,
Bill

This afternoon I'll be spending a couple hours checking out/surveying
the Black Gauntlet. I'll post a followup when I get a few moments if
anyone is interested.
Anyone have any experience with BG or BGII?
If I end up with her she'll be sailed out of Long Island Sound.

Mr Bolger was kind of enough to fax over a few details regarding the
major differences between BG & BGII.
So now I'm looking for additional info.

Thanks,

I have had a longing, love, lust some word like that for both the
Blackgauntlet and the Black Skimmer since I first saw pictures for them
so many years ago. If that boat was on the west coast it would have a
new home.

Gosh, Bolger said his sharpies were a poor investment, and you would
not get your money back on Black Gauntlet, but this is ridiculous,

Not surprising, given that she was designed to be an improved Pointer.
Apparently, four people are already lined up to take her....

Pretty cool!

The sharpie hull reminds me of Bolger's Pointer.

Yup, she's in Connecticut and is FREE to a good home. Boat is
believed to be the original Blackgauntlet, designed in 1961 for Peter
Duff. Sounds like she's in great shape for a 40-year-old plywood
boat. See:
