Yes, I agree that's what they were designed for....
But.
I've had good luck setting it to "unscrew" and whopping
the end of it with a hammer. Seems abusive (and it is)
but I've got one that was a hand-me-down and hasn't failed
me yet (and it's about 75 years old or so.)
One other note... I looked at mine last night after I
wrote you all and realized that they too have a four-corner
shank - perhaps a source of replacement bits for an
auger?
