Re: [bolger] MJ making knots
Steve---
Hey, no joke. I want to capsize and do some live testing. I am quite eager
to study this boat. Although I don't always go in the water with the lee
rail, I prefer warm water and/or a warm day to get my nerve up, plus, of
course, plenty of wind. So far, that order has been too tall for a Virginia
springtime.
Re MJ upgrades, I want to know more about my boat before I alter anything.
All of PBF's suggestions are interesting. Naturally some more than others.
Such as sponsons.

mr. b. has recommended? They are going to be published in the next issue of
MAIB. I have my set - I suspect that they will generate a great deal of

I am just wondering about your new mast - what you think of
if the boat now recovered. For the group, we're discussing my Martha Jane.
Still haven't had good winds for that. But I am very pleased otherwise all
around. The old fir mast was 100.5 lbs. The new 3-1/2 sch 40 aluminum mast,
fully rigged is 69 lbs. She balances 9-1/2 aloft on a spar 20 ft long, so
the weight savings is substantial and, I must say, quite noticeable. It's
also much easier to raise and lower the sail with a parrel that is a loop
from the yard around the mast.
The pivot slides through a pipe welded at the 4-1/2 ft point. The pipe fits
the pivot pin perfectly. I plugged the ends with discs of 2in styrofoam. I
topped the mast with a wooden cone 6 in high.
The whole has cost me a cool $500 start to finish.

>it - how much lighter it ended up being, how you rigged it etc. SteveSteve, I have held off responding because I wanted to do a capsize and see
if the boat now recovered. For the group, we're discussing my Martha Jane.

<< I tossed my Christmas present overboard today. It's called a
Knotstick and it measures waterspeed. It told me I was doing 8 knots.
I think that's pretty respectable. Martha Jane is a fast boat. This
was a close reach, no quite a beam reach in 20-25 k of wind. Later on
I got a rooster tail, indicating I was going faster yet, but as I was
alone, it was not convenient to throw the thing in the water at the
right times.
