Improving (?) AS19 Concept (was Re: Oldshoe article)
Wow, I gotta say all this talk of cuttin' and stickin' on various
cabin types to and from various boats/types sure gets ya goin'. Now
PCB&F are thinking about 'birdwatcherin' Oldshoe. (IMO PCB is
probably right to consider lack of a cute cabin of sorts might put a
damper on enthusiasm for this design.) He seems fairly easygoing
about people altering his designs - doesn't stress - just says they
are no longer his (sailor beware).
I've heard before that PCB likes Long Micro. I wonder how much?
I've only heard his preference mentioned before in relation to
Micro. Greater SA/D ratio, and higher hull speed make for a cruiser
that will get to far away places in more acceptable times. I
beleive his preference is along the same lines as more clearly
expressed in his writing on lengthening Bobcat (Tiny Cat) to make
Catfish. That is, that the increase in more satisfactory performance
gained by stretching Bobcat a little is out of proportion to the
increase in cost and trouble. I hope he likes LM enough to give it
the Navigator/OML cabin treatment! And that easy reefing balanced
lug sail might be nice too! A square, shallow, seaworthy, _20 foot_
(+/- not much), long distance coastwise cruiser, for one or two,
certainly appeals. LM 'navigated' or 'OML-ed' hits the spot. I think
AS19 could too.
AS19 might have a bit less internal space, but it still might be
adequate. Has anyone in the group seen the interior of a boat,
Madrigal, I saw at Gavin Atkin's site?

How would AS19 with a 'madrigalised' deck and cabin, without that
rig change, meet the criteria? (no need for internal standing
headroom)

Also of interest are his comments regarding Long Micro and adding a
removable slot-top to Oldshoe which he feels is an under considered
design. I wonder if the name might have anything to do with it? Or the
fact that a Micro is just about as easy to build.

builder design changes. My interpretation of his comments are that
making changes to the design are fine by him, but then it is no longer
his design which might indicate you should not expect help from him if
you run into problems.
Also of interest are his comments regarding Long Micro and adding a
removable slot-top to Oldshoe which he feels is an under considered
design. I wonder if the name might have anything to do with it? Or the
fact that a Micro is just about as easy to build.
