Champlain is a displacement hull where the bottom rises up out of the
water aft. Retriever is planning hull with stright lines aft. I
thought at the time of the article that Retriever would be the big
winner, but not so.
No the lines are all different.

Watervan, Champlain and Retriever are the other three, all having been
built. Watervan and Champlain are well known, and photos are probably
Googable [did I make a new word?]. I have posted a model of Champlain
on my webshots site too.

Peter, thanks for posting the drawing of Inlet Runner. I hate to keep
pestering Bruce. Does anyone know if the hull lines of the other three
in this series are the same? I'm several hours from my MAIB's and
probably won't get back for a couple of weeks. I think I built my Lily
during this 4 issue span, as I was trying to get enough to try at the
MASCF in St Michaels in Oct'96. I remember I was soldiering wires at
nightfall, the Thursday before, and was heart in throat when I turned on
the power and nothing happened. Fortunately it finnaly ocurred to me to
set the circuit breaker and the motor worked. Thanks, Clyde

Inlet Runner was the last in a series of four in MAIBs starting with
Champlain in the August 15, 1996 issue. These were followed by Retriever, Watervan,
and Inlet Runner. All 22'.

Very much like _Fast Motor Sailer_, with six inches less width, and
decked of course, so the sides are not as tall. The angle, deadrise,
of the bilge panels is more steep on the Inlet Runner, I agree. [If
FMS can carry a sail rig, I bet that Inlet Runner could also.]

> Got a little Michalak in her too, or Michalak's got some Bolger.

I am unaware of any Michalak boat with a 'box forefoot' cutwater.

[I'd say] the Michalak 'signature' forefoot is the twisted deep vee, like...
http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/store/plans/jim/dorado/index.htm

Bolger has several 'signature' forefoots, the 'box forefoot' like with
Inlet Runner, FMS or Champlain;

...and also the 'fine line forefoot' like with Shivaree, One Man
Liveaboard, or Merlin.

...or also the twisted panel fillet like with Windermere, or Topaz.

And, the chopped bow hard chined SOP, like with Advanced Sharpies, or Micro.

Or even the plywood schooner bow like with Single Handed Schooner,
Teal, Folding Schooner, Pirate Racer, Birdwatcher, etc..

Another 22' bolger. Looks like a slender FMS 2, yet basic dimensions
are about the same. More deadrise than FMS 2 toward the stern?

Got a little Michalak in her too, or Michalak's got some Bolger.

Inlet runner came from that "four 22 footers" series in MAIB five?
or six? years ago. Retriever, Champlain, Watervan, Inlet Runner.
Bruce, I haven't seen Inlet Runner before. Did it come from one of the
books? Clyde

Yeah, the models are fun, but also they are a
good way to better understand Phil Bolger's
thinking about hull shapes.

[Besides, I want to have so many of the
Bolger designs that I see, models are the
only way to do that.]

For instance, I hadn't realized his thinking about the
_Inlet Runner_, until I made the model. That is that
he has compromised the high buoyant bow, with the
straight run aft [for planing]. Other 'crossing the bar'
boats tend to be low buoyancy aft, so that the stern
doesn't rise on the back side of the trough.

Indeed, Bolger strikes a double compromise with
_Inlet Runner, with the open transom. A breaking
wave 'pooping' would wash the deck and lower the
buoyancy aft somewhat.

Oh,I see...your thinking of an even bigger museum then I was for your
ever growing collection of 12"= 1' scale models :-D
Excellent!

Sincerely,

Peter Lenihan, just back from taking a walk outside and marvelling at
the frost on the parked cars...it is already 0C out there!
> I'm tellin' ya Bruce, you've gotta start makin' 'em outta wood

I am.

Twelve sheets of ply, six gallons of epoxy and fortyfive yards of
cloth into my Topaz Spyder so far; the frames are done, and the sides
80% fabricated. The bottom is next.

She's still in a pile, but I can already get a feel for the size. It
is pretty big. A 31 foot long runabout, impressive.

"Good God",said Tom,"he's at it again!"
I'm tellin' ya Bruce, you've gotta start makin' 'em outta wood and
start shopping around for a suitable building or plans for one.You
could be the curator/head huncho/grand pooba of the as yet announced
Philip C.Bolger maritime museum!
Love those models and thanks for sharing them with us!
Paint them next time :-)

Sincerely,

Peter Lenihan, plainly jealous of Bruce's savy with hulls.exe,a digital
camera and leisure time......and who has only built a few,out of
wood, myself, from along the shores of the nippy St.Lawrence.......
