Re: [bolger] Re: Birdwatcher Video

Hang a big mirror on the ceiling and you'll get yourself and the boat in the
picture. (Use an off camera flash.)

Actually, I enjoy pictures of the details. <smile>
Bob: My pix are strictly lousy at the moment because
unlike you I turned the hull on the building table
inside the shop leaving me no room for cameras. Want
a good pic of a screwhole?
I've been drooling over your website -- anybody ever
tell you you do beautiful work?
Mast position: What thoughts on that? I've written
to PCB about moving it back to the BW I position
because my very pricy sailmaker has given me a
windward jib instead of a reacher. There's no
sheeting angle at all on stbd tack as far as I can
see.
I'll share his reply soon as I get it.
Pix when I get some.

Eric - Let us know if you post your BW2 pix. If this doesn't work, I
would like very much to receive them by email.

David Lipsey has posted some pix of his construction on
bolger4photos. My more-or-less up-to-date pix are at
http://www.proaxis.com/~boblark/bw2_main.htm
There are some nice BW1 shots at

I am probably forgetting some of the good ones.

I am currently installing the plywood/foam sandwich parts of the
roof, and fiddling with the battery box to build it into the bottom.
I am attempting to stick pretty close to the plans, with some minor
changes like swapping the second battery for some water jugs.

Doug, "oarman" has his BW in the Florida waters. He describes it as
BW1.5 as it has elements of each. He might add to this. I am unaware
of a true BW2 being finished.

Actually, Yahoo prevents people from sending pictures to the group, no
blame to your browser.

You might also consider posting your pictures to the free photo posting sight

http://www.flickr.com/

There are certainly a lot of people around here who would love to see them.
I've sent John a couple of BirdwatcherII
construction pix but my browser prevents me from
sending them through Yahoo! mail to the group. I'd be
happy to exchange pix with other BW builders/sailors
for4 mutual support and encouragement. I'll put the
cutline text here but you'll have to visualize for
yourself.

Jan 7 2006 BirdwatcherII closeup of foredeck.
Enclosed the foredeck this week with the scantlings a
little increased from the plans to allow people to
swing themselves aboard both from the beach and from
the water.
I expect to have the hatch open when not underway.
PCB makes reference to the forehatch being the place
for muddy boots and warps. I note that standing in
the hatch leaves a 22inch bulkhead to be stepped over
-- providing that the rowing seat is stowed against
the aft side of the bulkhead as a step. The seat box
is going to be altered in order to fit snugly against
the 16inch base of the bulkhead, with wedge-shaped
handles at the sides shaped to fit against the sides
of the hull.
I dream of teaching my grandchildren to sail in this
boat while their legs are still too short for
scrambling over obstacles -- and while their ability
to fall off things is already fully developed!
Eric
ps. The boat shed is walled with greenhouse plastic
sheet but the framing is heavy enough to withstand
near hurricane force winds. Keeping my fingers
crossed.

Jan 7 2006 BirdwatcherII wide angle shot.
Just started making patterns for the polycarbonate
windows out of old election signs (blue). The forest
of clamps aft is holding the afterdeck edge stiffener.
There's no cutout in the coaming to starboard
because I plan to move the maststep inboard in line
with the centreboard trunk -- as it appears in the SBJ
cartoon from 1986.

Some time ago I asked the group whether anyone had seen the video of
the Birdwatcher that Mr Bolger and Friends had made. There were no
responses. I wrote to the man and he replied that they had a lot of
footage of both BW1 and Bw2 but had not edited it and had no time at
the moment to finish it. However it will be done in the future (not
specified). He did say that there was a "fleet" of BW2's out there
under construction, but none sailing yet. So, all you BW2 builders
out there, keep the stories and pics coming (especially when finished
and sailing) so that we can get the feedback on sailing performance,

Thanks for the reply. I guess no one has ordered it or it does not
exist. Bolger also wrote me a quick but personal letter when he
sent me the Micro modification plans that I bought from him. I have
the urge to build another boat. I would love a design with all the
characteristics of the Micro, but would sail a bit faster and point
better. Seems like a letter to him setting out my requirements is
the way to go (and also enquire about the Birdwatcher video),

Cheers,

John

Hi
I've been saving your message, John, in hopes that
someone would tell how to get hold of the video that
Mr. Bolger suggested he was thinking of doing about
two years ago. Any joy on that? I'd very much like to
get a look at it, too. Try asking him by snail mail
-- he wrote me a wonderful personal letter when he
sent me my plans -- very helpful.
I'm putting the deck on my Birdwatcher II at the
moment, working to a March deadline when I can send
the boat south from here. I'm feeling a bit lonely at
the moment after weeks of watching the Bolger group
messages -- is there a BW/ BWII group out there
somewhere?

Greetings,

woth a look? How much to buy? Are there any others? (I've heard
